What do you girls do to alleviate this issue. I have been dealing for about 5 days now! YUCK! Anyway I am trying to stay away from anything that can not be found in Nature. Any suggestions?

prune juice ..works like a charm..LOL
also you could try drinking some hot tea..3-4 cupfulls back to back. Up your veggie content and you can also add benefiber to drinks or cereals.
Oatmeal works good.
Up your liquids a bit.

I drink lots of water, and eat very high fiber foods. I get at least 30 gms of fiber a day. The only time I had problems was when I was pg the first few weeks. Seems there wasn't really a way to relieve it then no matter how much fiber or water I had! lol haha

I eat dried plums (prunes). Once I got past the societal stigma against them, I found I actually really enjoy them! One serving is 7, but I end up eating way more than that! Whenever I want a snack, instead of going for the sweets or salty stuff in the cupboard, I go for the dried fruits. My mom was worried that I might go a little overboard and have the opposite problem of constipation- but it really helped my digestive tract get back to normal as I was fighting constipation too.

Oh and drinking lots of water. Water truly is the key. No matter how much fiber you take, nothing will soften up if you don't have enough fluids.

Fiber up on a daily basis! I eat a high fiber cereal for breakfast & then lots of fruits (apples, pears, bananas) and high fiber bread & vegetables through the rest of the day. Get a chart on how much fiber foods contain & try to get your 23 grams in a day. Don't forget to drink your 8-8 ounces of water per day too. You'll stay fit as a fiddle then!

These are all great for long term problems which I don't have. I am looking for something that will give immediate relief. Any suggestions for that?

I drink iced tea and oreo cookies. I'm not being funny,....this works for me almost immediately. Also, a tall glass of grape juice. There's something about the tea and chocolate that makes me go when I need to but can't. Good luck. Mommom

Julie-

The dried plums worked for me with in about 12 hours. Seriously- just munch down on them like crazy and drink as much water as you can hold. If you need even more immediate relieve you might want to take stool softener. But since I am not sure how those work I am a little hesitant to take them. I did take them after giving birth, but that was the first time ever.

Oh and even just eating one dried plum will help within 24 hours. Or at least they did me. The more you eat the more (and faster) the benefit you will get.

well this might not be natural but you know those tiny little surgar free mints that come in real cute tins. well all you have do is eat some of that sugar free candy and you will go and go and go. it has sorbital in it. if that fails or you don't want to use it try a fleet enama. I don't think that is how you spell it but you get my drift.

if that doesn't work -- go to the doctor -- you don't want to mess around with an impacted bowel.

I am allergic to plums, raspberries and key limes. I know it is random but all three cause me to go into anephelactic shock. I can eat everyother stone fruit, every other berry and regular limes with no problems. My dad has the same reaction to yellow squash and cantelope! I know we are freaks!

Like I said earlier I tried the tea( i drank hot tea) and it seemed to help but really only a little. I am off to drink another mug of tea and chew some altoids!

I live in chronic pain and often have to take some pain meds and that can be constipating! I drink water, eat fiber and all the rest, but sometimes I still need help. I use Milk of Magnesia. Not often, but it works great for me, no cramping. And as for natural...Magnesium is a natural mineral.

girlfriend five days is way to long you are going to cause a blockage. Take some metamucil right away (its fiber) takes 12 hours to work so we take it at bedtime. Anyone with colon cancer history is told by doctors to take this, If you do not have bowel movement everyday you should up your fiber and drink tons of water. By leaving the waste in your body toxins will grow and create cancer. Five days is too long! Also eat breads or foods with word prebotic on them this info is doctor recommended. Dempsters new bread has this. Prebiotic is a form of medicine in pill form a doctor will give you to take when you get to cramping. Do something immediately and be sure to have a movement everyday or you can end up in a lot of pain.

Julie,

If you are not allergic, pear juice (sometimes called pear nectar) is usually found in stores near the other fruit juices. This was recommended to my DH in the hospital after one of his surgeries, as a natural, prompt and effective solution or preventative. Load up on 8-16 ounces for relief of an existing problem, and take smaller amounts on a regular basis if you tend toward a chronic problem.
Water, too; apparently the bowel is the very last part of your body to get hydrated by your fluid intake, so if you don't get enough liquids your bowel function suffers.

Hope you're okay by now!

Jo

*FLAX SEEDS*!!!!

They have no taste, they only provide texture. I add they to nearly *everything* I eat, even ice cream. Yeah, they produce gas, but they "...keep the pipes clean..." ~ K

Julie - Get thee to the supermarket and pick up a couple bags of the sugar free chocolates for diabetics.

My oldest daughter thought she had found a candy she could go absolutely crazy on (she has juvenile diabetes) and soon learned all things are good in moderation. ;) They also work particularly well for toddlers who are so very picky about medicinals.

Hope that helps.

Can you try something at your natural food store? Pears are good if you can't handle prunes. In the babyfood section of the supermarket they have pear juice. Try drinking it really cold and then drink something really hot. Do it standing up.

My helps are: either cold chocolate milk OR hot vegetable soup. For some reason they work well.

And you can try going to a bookstore. For some reason looking at books & magazines while I'm standing makes me need to head to the restroom every single time!!!! It's pretty annoying.

Did you know that on most fiber supplements it says that the product may cause CONSTIPATION?

I tried these while pregnant and it was useless.

My poor son has to be on glycolax. Some fibers are better than others. My sister and I have been reading up on them.
