Oh I love Moscow, ID so much! Why on earth did Moscow have to be so far from my home town?! 14 hours of driving time and about that much traveling time when flying is just way too much! I want to be closer to family, but I love the climate in Moscow. We never are happy are we?
But I see my sisters living so close to my mom and dad and how much fun all the cousins have playing with each other. It just breaks my heart to have to go home Sunday. I miss my fiance and my dog horribly, but it is going to be so hard to take Nora away from the rest of my family too!
I really just want to find the ability to buy land close to my home town, buy my animals that I need to feed my family, dig myself a really big garden and live!! Each day my heart just aches for land and a home close to my family!
Anyone else feeling the call to return to the land as strongly as this? Or the call to return to family? My family just doesn't work as well when we are all spread out!
My family even owns some land in the mountains, but it doesn't have running water and the land would take a lot of clearing and enrichment to really grow a good crop. I don't think the rest of my family would be too keen on me destroying the natural beauty surrounding the cabin. And I wouldn't like it too much either.
Oh Sigh!
Sorry I just had to vent! I knew you ladies would understand!

Where in Wyoming does your family live? I saw some really beautiful country when I went to visit my DS. The view out his bedroom window is spectacular - Grand Tetons. |

Hi Sherri!
The Grand Tetons are some of the most beautiful mountains in the World (in my opinion). My family lives a little north east of there in the Big Horn Mountains around Worland Wyoming. Anything in Wyoming is better than the 14 hour drive from Idaho!! :)

Oh Alee I SO am going through the same thing right now. Only I want to go somewhere my family would never move to. My parents are VERY homey I guess you could say, we never had a family vacation always stayed home, heck the first time I left California I was married with a baby! I want to move to Spokane area or northern Idaho area so bad I can feel it it my bones. But then I sencond guess us (dh&I) would it be fair to move my kids away from their nana and papa whom they are so close to? Are they big enough to be okay with a huge move or would it tramatize them? I hate it because I know I dont belong in this stinky smoggy crowded mean valley of california, I belong in the hills growing my own food and working my own land that I can pass to my kids. I hate it here, but my parents would never move. I am even trying to talk them into atleast saying if we get property big enough for 2 houses would they move eventually? But I dont know, I have been doing ALOT of praying and embriodery I need some guidance!! lol I am sorry to ramble but just know I am feeling the way you are now. Hopefully we will get the answers we need soon!!! Hugs!

Take it from a more "experienced" (older) woman. Everyday is new - you can reinvent your life at any time you want. Just be true to yourself. |

I'm in a rather reverse situation here. I would love to move east, where there are actually seasons. However, my mother is here, so this is where I am. Mom doesn't want to move and I don't want to leave her here alone. Land is too costly here to have the size property I want, plus we are staring at running out of water within 20 years or so.
But, they say home is where the heart is, and my heart is where my family is :)

Alee, I can sure understand your feelings. It is hard to know what is best. When you go home you always miss it. Going back to your place in Moscow, how do you feel living there. I have lived near family and away from family. Yes, I am older and miss them. Thank goodness for email. My parents and sister and 2 brothers all live in the same town. We live 7 hours away. Seems like not far, but on this budget don't get to go often. We are close and talk often. We moved here to take care of dh's parents who are both gone now. We have a home here, albeit small but we own the mobile. Can't really afford a place over there. DD and ds both live close. Ds doesn't have contact with us, his challenge. DD and SIL moved over here to be closer and job opportunity. No matter the decision it is tough and we even this old can get homesick every once in a while. Hang in there. I am selfish, I am glad you live this close to us so we can go berry picking with you. Carol Sue
Life is short, enjoy every moment. |

I certainly love the Moscow area. The people can be very nice and the crime rate is low. There are lots of schooling options for Nora, but it is just so hard to be away from family. I am hoping with in the next 3 years we can move. I want to do it before it gets too traumatic for Nora. And I hate that my parents and sisters miss out on so much of Nora's childhood right now.

we live almost 8 hours away from my in-laws, the kids see them about once every 2 or 3 months. the kids just adore the time with them and yes it is short and they miss them when they go, i think they have something very special. we didnt live in the same town as my grandparents and the times we had there were so special. we got to spend the night and see our cousins and aunts n uncles, cause when we came to town we all seemed to gather together which made it all the more special. so my kids get that too, when we go to grandmas or great grandmas. Hope some of this helps you out alee |

Hi Sherri!
I don't mind you asking at all. When I was a teenager I was rather, uh, shall we say independent? I reacted to the drama of my friends and since I had a great home life, I ended up creating drama at home because that (I guess) is what I thought was normal? Its kind of like that psychology study that was done a few years ago that showed that people who watch soap operas are around 80% more likely to have divorces...
Anyway, since I was in about 5th grade I wanted to be a vet and WSU in Pullman, Washington is in the top 3 ranked vet schools in the nation. So, I really wanted to go there. When the time came to choose a 4 year school, I didn't really think pursuing the Vet dream was practical but due to said drama I mentioned earlier I did want to try living further from home.
Actually once I was in my junior to senior year of high school, my relationship with my parents evened out a lot because I stopped being as much of a drama queen. Once I moved from home, out relationship got much stronger, but by then I had been focusing on getting out of Wyoming for so long- I didn't want to go the University of Wyoming.
It's funny how the things we think we really don't want when we are younger (and more immature) turn out to be the things we desperately desire as we gain some perspective.

Alee,
I soooo understand what you are saying. (Though I already live in WYoming. :o}) I urged my DH to move away from the main ranch onto a smaller piece of property we have in Evanston. I thought we wanted to be away from his family. Now, his mom is getting older and needs more help. We spend alot of time driving back and forth. It's worth it, but would be easier for all concerned if we were closer. Regarding Nora, she needs her grandparents. It does take a village to raise a child.
All my love,
Sherone

Oh Alee, I understand too-the longing to live someplace else. For me, when I was younger it was to move around and far from my small town. Now, after living away from family for over 20 years, I'm ready to be around family again. Mind you-our move to NC will put us near my DH's family-which is fine, but I'll still miss mine but they say they will visit me in the winter months. Fortunately, most of my family lives close to each other in Ohio so one visit and I can see them all. Ellen |

Alee, I know exactly how you feel. I gave in and live now on my Grandparents ranch. It isn't a working ranch yet, but will be soon. Ties are strong and sometimes you have to follow your heart. I did and no regrets.
You are a lucky girl to be from the Big Horns-that is such a beautiful area!

Yes, I am lucky to be from the Big Horns. It is such a beautiful area, and one that not many people go an visit, so it isn't swamped with tourists like the Grand Teton area is. Now, don't get me wrong- Tourists can be great, especially for the economy, but I like the peace and quiet in the mountains :) My fiance and I are really lucky. Our families live really close to each other. Both of us are from the same town. His parents just got a divorce, so his mom doesn't live there any more, but his dad still does.
The facts of the matter are that our grandparents are aging and we both would love to be closer. We only have a few years left with them and I want to visit more often. I am really hoping that if all else fails- we can move to the Billings area. It would be within driving distance of our family and would give us a lot of the opportunities of a big city.
Oh why haven't I finished my degree yet! I want school to start...TODAY! lol
I love all you ladies for being so supportive! And I am glad I am not the only one struggling with this right now!

Oh yes, move to Billings. That's where I shop when I'm at the cabin and DH flies into billings when he's working out of town. It'd be nice to know someone there - to have lunch with etc. when I go in town for the BIG shopping trip, once a month. |

Alee, I do understand the need and desire for your own place!! I was never near family, we moved my whole life so I could not tell you that you should stay. I think for everyone it is different, and you just have to deside for yourself what you feel in your heart of hearts is the best for you and your huney...because now you will be a family and you have to do what is best for that family. My parents will move where ever I settle so I will have them near someday, but I always try to focus on what is best for my family as in my children and husband. My kids only see my parents maybe once a year or so, but they are still very close to them, and when I was small my grandmother lived far away from us untill I was 8, but she was so close to me, sent me stories on tape and letters and cards and packages all the time. So I think it just depends on everything as to how much the miles affect the relationship! Now I will say that if your parents or family help with Nora in a good way, that is a wonderful thing to have. But my parents dont keep the kids hardly at all and are not that type of help so it makes no difference at this point if I am close or far away in terms of that. I wish you the best in finding out what is best and works for you!! Hang in there!! It will all work out in the end..it's the getting there !!! Hugz! Talitha

Hi Ladies!
Sherri- I would love to have lunches and such with you if we ever move back towards the Billings/Wyoming area. My hometown is only 3 hours from Billings, so even if we move back to Worland, I would still drive up to Billings to see you!
My parents are awesome with the grandkids, and love having my nieces and nephews over. They even have a section in the garden just for the kids to dig in. Recently my dad buried a bunch of loose change in the kid's digging area so they can find "buried treasure" when they are playing.
I agree that it is the "getting there" process that can be hard. I am really blessed to be where I am at right now. I get to stay home with Nora and will be returning to school in the fall. So I am trying really hard to not let my longing for something different in the future mar what I have now. Now is good. But going home always reminds me of how much I want something different for the future. ;p

Hi Alee, Keep it in your sights-things have a way of working out. Even if you have to wait a bit longer than you want! :) Once you return to school you'll be so busy-and I'm sure you're pretty darn busy already with Nora. Is this your last year? What program did you decide on there? Veterinary or something else? Ellen

Hi Ellen-
I have about 2 to 2 1/2 years left of school. I am a business major, and I plan on getting certified as a CPA. My goal is to be able to do accounting out of a home office so I can still be home for my kiddos. Nora keeps me busy and I need to do some work to get back into school for the fall, but I am really excited and hopeful!
