While in between little league tournament games for my daughter's softball team I had 30 min to kill so I went to a local (next town...where I was at the time) thrift store and looked around (I look mostly for books) and found a small treasure...a stamped embroidery tablecloth..brand new..the type with finished edges and stain guard and all..a really pretty design with small flowers and vines all around the edge...for $1 !!!!! It wasn't even dusty!!! I have quite a stash of floss so I will soon have a really cute new tablecloth... large card table size, it is square...to use. I love bargains!!

Good grief Jenny, you amaze me...is there anything you don't do?? Where do you find time to fit it all in!?! I love thrift stores, and find them the best place to buy "farmin" clothes. I've also found bags of wool for $2 which will make two or three pair of socks. It's also a great place to pick up cheap wool skirts for making braided rugs.

I just love love love thrift stores...there arn't many near me without traveling and the one I went to is more of a junk store..mostly worn out kids clothes and ugly dishes and dirty old furniture the college kids don't even want anymore..but every once it awhile there is a great thing...
up north in Provo..oh my gosh...great thrift stores..love it up there...I get most of my clothes and alot of my kids stuff at thrift stores for sure..I used to buy wool skirts for my hooked rugs too..the most fabric without seams right? I remember once finding the perfect shade of pumpkin orange and was so happy ..the lady at the counter thought I was nuts to be so excited over an orange wool skirt from the sixties that was obviously way way way too small for me!!

We both had good bargain finding days today, Aunt Jenny! Good for you! Yes, please post pics of the tablecloth!
My finds were about 25 yards of various cotton/blends materials for $6.00 and a cute 1950's footstool that is cream colored brocade-ish fabric with a gold thread running through it. In really good shape for $2.00! There was another one there missing a leg,.. might go back tomorrow and see if it's still there.. see if it would be fixable. I also got some nice books for my grandkids!

Hey..good shopping Clare!!! the footstool especially sounds so neat..I have a weakness for footstools!! I have been looking for just the right one to re cover with a piece of buffalo hide (fur on it still) that is from a buffalo that my dad got (hunted) a year before he died. It is about a yard square..not sure why my mom gave it to ME..but I want to use it for something. She really wanted me to take the mounted buffalo HEAD...but I drew the line at that..yikes..dosn't go with my stuff!! My husband was dissapointed though. (rolling my eyes)
Isn't it fun to find good books too? The book section at any thrift store is where I spend the most time!

Jenny, regarding the buffalo head. Have your mom bring it up in the camper she's towing and hubby can hang it in his newly cleaned out garage/wood shed!!!  Just teasing. I'm not into taxidermed animals at all. It's like their spirit is haunting you straight from their eyes.
Yes, Kay, I am a "material girl", in the most literal way!  Now I just have to get busy on those projects to use it all up!!!

All this hot , hot crazy weather across the country must have driven us all indoors to junk this past weekend. I had a day with the "girls" , the guys were all camping and surf fishing at the beach with the kids so we hit every thrift in the area. Treasures abounded for all! There were four of us and it's a good thing I have a little station wagon!
Here was our haul:
2 matching cotton pillowcases w/ crocheted edge 1.99*

Not bad for a days "work"! And we had a great lunch to boot! It is rarely as good as it was Sat. but we got lucky! None of us spent more than $20.00 with lunch included so we didn't feel like we were
overindulgent or spendthrifts!
Jenny, I love the sound of your tablecloth, what colors will you embroider it? That's a nice size because you can use it as a topper on any table. You can't beat the price! As for that buffalo head...we spent our childhood visiting grandparents who had the most enormous deer head with 12 point antlers looming over every family dinner we ever had. One of my uncles shot it when he was 14 and apparently it was "quite something" so they had it mounted.Needless to say for many years it was the source of torture for those of us with imaginations that ran wild. You know it comes to life while you're sleeping, it's body is coming back to find it's head, etc, etc...It started sporting hats and "accessories " provided by my demonic boy cousins in later years as we got older it was more of a shock value thing for them.It wasn't until my grandfather had moved downstairs that he let on he had never liked that big head there all those years!He never hunted!
Miss Clare-- So much fabric for so little! Yeah for you! That sounds like quilting yardage to me(she said with a sly smile!) Or were you thinking of aprons?! Glad you had a great find , I'm like Jeannie; I love to hear about other people's fabulous treasures out "junking" !
And it's fun to share them with other people that appreciate "a treasure" at bargain prices!

Wow..Bramble..you really hit the jackpot..and it sounded like a fun day too!!!
That buffalo head is only one of many "heads" my mom has been trying to palm off on the relatives since my dad died. He was really into hunting and had a big mule deer (I grew up with that one in the living room) an elk, a caribou and an antelope, the buffalo and a pheasant and some sort of unusual duck. Plus a zillion antlers in the garage rafters. I told her I wouldn't mind someday a set of elk antlers for steve's garage but no other stuff and NO heads. I don't think she is crazy about them either, but I think since they were my dad's pride and joy she hates to just pack them up. She ought to..yikes.
I think I will embroider the tablecloth with shades of butter yellow flowers...my kitchen has John Deere colors so I tend to think of that. I am not possitive yet though, since I would like shades of rose too...maybe I will do mixed colors..that would be a good solution.

Jenny, I have seen some incredible chandliers made of iron and decorated with a jumble of antlers... maybe that's a possibility, rather than just chucking it all?
I've been thinking of getting back into embroidery, too. Will love to see your color choices when you get it all together!

Kay, I only need vague "ideas" of what to use it for. This makes the justification process very simple! Picked up a couple more pieces today on my journey back to have another look at stool # 2. TAWANDA!!! I decided to get it. It is charming... medium brown brocade with a 4 inch fringe around the bottom, which hides rollers. It is a "challenged" footstool as it has only three rollers, but it doesn't seem to tip. I'll have to see about making it more stable. It will match my estate sale find of the side chair that I recovered last fall. I'm just scoring all around lately, it seems! But two days in a row for shopping is a record for me.... better lay off now for awhile! haha.

Hmmmmm a chandelier!! I will have to think about that..we do have pretty high ceilings! My mom will keep every single one of those things until the day she dies unless one of her kids takes them (there are only three of us) knowing her. She never chucks anything. I will have to think on that..maybe for me new patio !!

How wonderful to know that someone else is infected with this mania! I can't wait to see pics of your tablecloth Jenny. What shape is your footstool Claire - I'm trying to picture it. And Bramble, I am just in awe of your haul. Wow!
I smuggle my finds into the house as if I were bringing home a questionable magazine. Then when Mr. Wonderful (I'm not being sarcastic, he IS wonderful) asks about the glass and sterling coasters or the cream colored McCoy vase, I just say, "That OLD thing????" I suspect that I'm not fooling anyone.
My latest finds:
A wooden "Little Orphan Annie" I-Cord Maker complete with crochet hook $1.49
A set of Bakelite yarn bobbins $2.00
12 Vintage Handkerchiefs (in a $1.95 bag of yucky scarves)
A set of stamped all cotton pillowcases to be embroidered - they came in a one pice tube shape which you
cut in half and then seam across the end $0.29
A whole manufacturers box of Medium Dark Red Embroidery Thread. 25 Skeins. Will come in handy for the
pillow cases since they have hearts and roses on them. $0.25
Oh, and the McCoy vase, "Isn't your mom's maiden name McCoy? (yes) Why don't you just take it?"

Wow...good stuff too! What will you do with the vintage hankies? I just love them. I keep meaning to frame one that I have that has a calender of the year I was born on it..1958. My grandma saved it for me and gave it to me when I was in my 20's. I have always kept it in my sock drawer...need to do something with it.

Lucinda, you have great luck! My first footstool (cream colored) was rectangular approx 20" x 12". The second brown one is almost square, about 16" x 12"... and they both fit perfectly and look so "at home" in my home. I think they are glad to be here!

I bought a box of very old vintage paper napkins a lady collected over a 50 year period for .50. She must have been invited to a lot of little kids b-day parties, Valentines, and even a St Patricks. They are so cute, and really nostalgic. They have yellowed considerably. Any ideas what to do with them? The ones from the 40's-50's appealed to me...But there are some funny ones from the 60's and 70's too.

Clare - Your footstools sound lovely.  There is something so genteel about a footstool, as opposed to an ottoman, something that just cries out for hand needlepointed slippers..... And isn't it nice to give a new home and a new life to such a wonderful item?
Meadowlark - I was trying to think of something clever you could do with your paper napkins. They sound soooo neat. I once visited a friend who had made color photocopies of her vintage valentine collection and then used the copies as a wallpaper border at the top of her wainscotting in her kitchen. That's the only thing that comes to mind. I'll bet there are other farmgirls out there with better ideas. You could arrange them in a collage and frame them maybe.
Jenny, I have a confession . I have been collecting hankies for nearly as long as I have been on this earth. I probably have between 1500 and 2000. The ones that are not in the finest shape I carry in my handbag and keep in my nightstand for *gasp* actual nose blowing. The finest ones I have collected into books I made with linen pages I sewed together. There are several books: Souvenier & State Maps, Round Hankies, Greeting Card Hankies, Children Hankies, Florals, Famous Designers like Tammis Keefe and Pat Prichard, etc. You get the idea, I'm out of control.
I really think you should frame your birthday Hankerchief.  What a treasure! When you do, be sure that you, or the framer, use archival supplies. Until then, you will want to take it out of the drawer and roll it up in a cotton towel before storing again. The acid in the wood in your dresser drawer will eventually harm the fabric and folding it can break the fibers over time.

All this talk of footstools reminds me of ones my grandmother used to make (she was the most wonderfully talented, make-do person I've ever known). She used large (quart-size?) tin cans and somehow fastened about six of them together in a "daisy" pattern. She then partially filled them with sand I think and then upholstered the whole thing. Anyone ever seen or made one of these?

We had a stool made of cans when I was growing up. It was covered in fabric. It was similar to the one in MJ's book. I should try to recreate it!
