Okay, so Jesse (oldest dd) is growing green beans in her 4H mini-garden. So far, everything is great- but I know these things are going to get huge, and I don't know how to stake them. I've seen stakes at the ends of rows, connecting a string across the top, with strings hanging down for each plant, and variations of that same thing. What's the best way to handle them?
Thanks- Kim in NC |

Are they pole beans or bush beans? For pole beans, I love making bean tipis out of bamboo poles. We build up the soil in a ring shape, with a circular depression in the middle. We plant the beans on the raised circle and water in the depression. This is a fun project with kids and the more tipis you make, the cooler it looks. Here's a picture that I posted in another part of the forum. Our beans are a lot bigger now and are starting to produce.

We use the wire mesh used for pouring concrete. Run long stakes to secure into the ground tee-pee at the top to let beans run on the opposite side, that way you can pick from the underneath side too |

I am either going to make my own string trellis or I am going to go buy a length of Chicken wire for mine. I have them in a row next to the house.
