I know that an avocado tree/plant has no chance of growing up here in my clime, but I'm in the mood for a kitchen science experiment. I can't remember the details of making an avocado pit sprout. Isn't it something about toothpicks, a jar of water and hope?

Please share details if you know! Thanks!

Catherine

We always spouted ones that where already trying to sprout but what you do is prick the side of the seed with 3 or 4 toothpicks which ever you need to keep the seed from falling in the jar place the toothpick a little above half way place seed over wide mouth jar that is filled to the brim. We always placed the tooth picks at a little of an angle so the seed could sit lower in the jar less likely to spill change the water regularly so it doesn't go stagnet. When you have a tree about 1 foot tall plant.

I'm always growing some kind of thing from seed, mangoes, oranges, papayas, etc. It's fun to see what they look like. My daughter brought me back some exotic seed when she was in Costa Rica...I was thrilled! In my next life I'm going to have a huge glassed in room to grow just fun stuff.
Anyway, I have grown avocado pits a couple of ways. I've sprouted them in an egg cup and also planted them half buried in potting soil, pointy side up. I think half burying them and keeping them moist works best to avoid them rotting. It grows a really nice houseplant.

When I lived in Minnesota..years ago...I grew an avocado seed "tree" and it ended up about 3 ft tall (I planted it in a pot when it was about a foot tall) and I left it with a neighbor when we moved. Be sure to put the big side down, and keep that part at least a little under water. We do them all the time.

I think I've got a "bum" seed. We've followed all of those directions for about 8 weeks and all I've got to show for it is a cracked pit -- no germination, just cracked.

Oh well - another avocado in the fridge... ~ K

Thanks for the tips, everyone! Sunshine, I especially appreciate the links. I've got mine toothpicked and balancing on a Mason jar...we'll see what happens!
