I'll get on that tomorrow. And I haven't been paying attention the gathering storm of interest in your bath milk in the recycled milk bottles. Where do I find ordering info?

I have been able to harvest two "buggywhips" (meaning Rose of Sharon plants small enough to mail but big enough to grow if planted immediately upon receipt) and tomorrow will mail them to the two folks who asked for them. I'll be in touch about the postage cost. I'm gonna have to use those long shipping tubes and probably Priority Mail so they don't die en route. I'll add some of their "native soil" and make sure the roots stay moist, of course. Not sure what that'll cost. If it's more than it would cost you to go to your local nursery and buy a Rose of Sharon bush in a pot, would you rather do that? They grow ferociously fast, by the way. What is only a two-foot buggywhip now will be a bust-high bush next summer!

Rosemary-

Check rates with UPS and Fed-Ex too please. Fed-Ex has been by far more reliable. The most issue I have had with them has been my own fault for transposing numbers in zip codes!

Do you know if the seed pods could be plucked now and planted? I'll be sending out a couple of baby Rose of Sharons to 2 farmgirls tomorrow, and I'm thinking it might be fun to add some of the seeds.

Also, just a relevant note in case no one has mentioned it: Rose of Sharons are hermaphrodites, or whatever the hortcultural version of that is. In other words, you don't need male and female plants to get flowers, seed pods, and, of course, lotsa baby Rose of Sharons. They self-pollinate, the little sluts!

Love your uranium joke! I wanted to mention that I also have clay soil, and I read somewhere that all the Mallows (malvae-something in Latin) go for that, especially if other considerations are right. Mine seem to like being in shade, under big trees but beside an open yard or field. (Farmgirls who don't get ROS babies might actually be moving over seedlings without realizing it.)

Mine are all singles, by the way. Does that signify older? My mom always used to have be believe that the double type of hollyhocks weren't the "real" kind, but something created in a greenhouse to attract new customers.

Is Rose of Sharon related to Common Mallow? Because if it is- I will have a gazillion in a year- Common Mallow is invading my yard, invading...nevermind- It has invaded, taken over and is slowly moving on to the rest of Moscow. I think total domination is it's goal...

I thought - that those pictures looked like a bush we had in our front yard at our last house. The lady next door called it Mallow. It was beautiful. ROS is different?

Hibiscus, Mallows of many kinds, Rose of Sharon, Althea, Hollyhocks, all are related. Here's the whole "family tree":

Alright, Alee (and others...)my rose of sharons have been really prolific bloomers this year--they really seem to dig the heat!!! Color's of note:
white with rose colored center, blueish with rose colored center, and bright pink with dark rose center.

I'm awaiting the seed pods and will distribute them to whomever is willing!!!!

Yes please! Send me all you have! My down stair neighbors and I want to plant a hedge to fence out some other neighbors that insist on using our lawn as a doggie walking place. And having a beautiful flowering hedge would be so sweet! :)

The starts that I have so far are recovering nicely. I am not sure if they are all going to make it, but some of them are finally starting to put out new leaves! :)

Reality check: to those of you who asked me to send them "buggy-whip" sized Rose of Sharon seedlings from my farm, I've discovered that the cost of sending them in a way that would ensure they'd arrive fresh enough to plant and enjoy is really prohibitive. I'm sorry, but I can't swing it. Please let me know I'm forgiven for opening my mouth too soon!

Oh Rosemary! That is fine! You were so sweet to think of us! Please don't worry about it! None of us wants you to break the bank to share with us.

I'd have to break INTO the bank, actually ;-) And with my luck, every cop in town would be next door having coffee when the alarm went off...

LOL Well- we certainly would not want that! Maybe when they produce seeds we could do a seed swap and you could share with us that way?

Hey Rosemary if you can get seeds, that would be great, don't even worry about the whip. Sure do understand breaking into the bank. LOL
Let us know when they are ready, I have been invisioning them next summer, how very very cool.
I wish I had thought about seeds before but didn't have this blog going or I had not noticed it yet, cause I had lambs ear, sweet william, columbine, what else. So Miss Alee you best be making a trip up here in September so we can transplant and make you an extrodianry fence line!!!!!!

Ii can collect seeds. It's been rainy, but is drying up gain. Does anyone know how to tell when the seed pods should be picked? If I let them dry out too much on the bush, they might pop out on their own before I can collect them, but if I pick the pods too soon, they might not ripen properly. Advice?

And Carol Sue, would you trade me some Sweet William seeds for my Rose of Sharon? I seldom see them available in packets here, and I just love them. They were my father's favorite (his name was William).

Alee's fence line reminds me that I could transplant some of my "rosewhips" to fill in some bare spots in what I laughingly refer to as my hedgerow -- really just uncontrolled weed trees and whatnots -- lovely, but hardly worthy of such a la-di-dah name as "hedgerow!"

Sweet! Thanks! I'll check out the Rose of Sharon situation tomorrow morning and see if I can figure out when the time is right to nip some of those seed pods. I'll send you my address off-list in a minute.
