Back in May we started this thread about Rose of Sharon and as we read we see there are many varieties. Some have seed pods and many unwanted seedlings, some don't. I said I would post a picture of mine when they started blooming. FINALLY they are blooming. They are very pretty and I guess I am fortunate not to have seeds or seedlings. Good. Carol Sue! Your Sweet William seeds arrived in the mail yesterday! What fun :-) I think I might try some in the ground right now as if they'd self-seeded (though verrrrrrry far away from their home garden) and save the rest for spring -- some started indoors, some sown directly outside later. I'm trying a homemade cold frame this year; some of your Sweet Williams will be part of the experiment.

That's so pretty, Marybeth. Mine are all dropping buds because until this morning, we haven't had rain in about a month. Plus, we've set a record for consecutive days above 90 degrees(some days above 100)!

We just had two good days of rain so I am hoping my little twigs are doing good. Some of them looked like they were putting out leaves and then the heat zapped them. So I am hoping to go out and see lots of little leaves everywhere! :)

I hope so, Alee. Right now, I'm afraid I'm going to lose full grown bushes, trees, etc. that are five or six years old. The drought is just a nightmare here. We are at the point of declaring some kind of loss on our income taxes this year. It's just a matter of how much will be lost. I'm still hoping for some seed pods on some of my Rose of Sharon bushes. We had a little rain today. I just keep hoping, praying and watering what I can.

Oh Janice, that is hard to watch those lovely plants that you have cared for struggling so badly. We were so fortunate to have rain for 2 days, it has been a very long time since we have had some. Praying for you to get some.

These are photos of three of my Rose of Sharons. At least they did look like this about three weeks ago, the last time it rained at all here. The solid white one is called 'Diana'. It is a sterile bush and does not put out seed pods. The raspberry colored double one puts out seed pods. So does the pale pink double. It is a 'sport' off of another bush called 'Bridal Bouquet', just a little deeper in color, with deep pink accents on some of the petals. I'm still hoping for seed pods(we had a little rain yesterday and some is forecast for early next week) by the end of August/beginning of Sept. I also have a nearly blue one and a white one with a red center. I think they both put out seed pods, too. Hopefully, Alee and Carol Sue, I will have seeds to send you. Alee - Over the winter(I know this sounds way in advance), I'm going to try to figure out a way to start some for you here and send them safely in the mail to you. There must be a way to pack/ship them in some kind of container. I'm going to figure it out. If nobody has invented safe packaging for a taller, rooted plant, well then, I guess I'll have to invent it myself! LOL

That is weird, Mary Beth. And for years, I wondered about 'Diana'...why didn't it put out anything? Was my dh weed eating any/all possible little starts nearby? Was I mowing over them? And just this year, I found out accidentally(reading something online) that the poor bush is sterile and has to be started from a cutting only. I like to save the little ones that do come up in other beds, just because who knows what they may look like...I also used to think that the suckers were just like the parent plant, then I found out otherwise about that this year, too. Surprise! I felt bad because I had sold a few last year at a farmer's market, thinking they were the same as the parent...oops!

Ahh Janice, you are just learning like the rest of us. Hmmm starts, hmmm if you figure how to sent them can you send a few along this way. I am so looking forward to changing around my small flower bed up front the flanks my sewing room window. I have 2 big honeysuckels, dont you think Rose of Sharons and Hollyhocks would be so cool with them. Yep, been thinking again.....

Yes, Carol Sue. If I just live long enough, I may learn a few things! LOL And your landscaping plan sounds very cottagey and pretty to me. I've planted several around my trailer. I call myself the President and only member of the Rose of Sharon Fan Club here - LOL. I'll be happy to send you starts in the spring and seeds in the fall if you want to try it both ways. I've never tried to grow one from seed myself, so I don't know how that works or how long it takes for it to get big enough to bloom. But I'm determined to root some here(I have good luck with that) and send them out in the world! :D
PS - Mary Beth - About how tall is your beautiful bush and do you prune it to keep it at a certain height? I'm wondering if mine will get 'fatter' if I prune off some of the top growth...

Carol Sue--you were thinking? Oh oh what's going to happen now? lol
Janice those bushes I have must be--wait I'll go measure them--about 8 ft. tall and huge around. You can see how big around it is in the picture. 4 1/2 years ago they were probably 3ft. tall. I guess they like where they are. on the west side of the house where they get lots of sun. I have never pruned them but maybe I should. I will have to see if they would get pruned after blooming or in the spring. MB

Alee, was it you to whom I was supposed to send my Rose of Sharon twigs with seed pods. plus a bunch of seeds collected from opened pods, and you sent me the postage money? Can I send them to you now?
If not Alee, who was it? I've lost the address and everything! Oh woe is me! I felt awful when I found the package of twigs, seeds etc. this morning and remembered they were promised to a FarmGirl who has probably already written me off for a scoundrel!
ps: It's not to late to scrape and scatter the seeds -- in fact, now might be a perfect time, or maybe a little later.

Hi Janice!!! Got the seeds yesterday! Wow! thanks so much!
Hubby got me a tiller on Thursday so we'll be adding on to the cottage garden and putting in some raised beds. It will be fun to finally get all the seeds from you gals in the ground and growing!
