She's OLD!!! No conundrum there!! Sorry, Marybeth, I had to. She tells me lots of things that are somewhat backwards, so that wouldn't surprise me but she's a very dear neighbor to have. You've just had the smarts to look it up, whereas, I have not. I just like to cuss them and spend countless hours digging them up :)

Absolutely.. I'll see what I can find after they bloom this summer. The one by my kitchen door is HUGE and is a raspberry colored one. It's very hearty, so that will be a good "donor"! They usually produce the pods by the end of the summer, so count on some seeds in the mail!

Oh Thank you! How long does it take for the bush to grow from seed to flowering?

Alee, Janice will laugh at me, but I swear, you'll have a flock of them in no time. I don't know what it is in my soil (uranium???) but it's mostly clay, and they just don't seem discerning about where they plant themselves. I'll collect the pods throughout the summer, and send them to you, you should plant them immediately, and I believe by next spring, you should have considerable starts.

I am so excited! It would be so fun to do a hedge of them and start "fencing" in my yard with bushes!

Farah, I'd be glad to, and no way, you're not going to pay for them when I have such an abundance!
Incidentally, I went out last night and "surveyed the troops" of Rose of Sharon's, and they're looking really healthy, so by the end of the growing season, they should be REALLY prolific with their seed pods. I don't know how many seeds per pod, but I'm going to say at least 4-6 based on the seedlings around the larger trees.
And Alee, they DO grow fast!!! I found one in my rose beds that I SWEAR wasn't there last week. They must really crave the heat wave we've had because they are LUSH!

Jonni, Count me in if you have enough seeds. My father had given me the original bushes but they stayed there when we moved. He really loved them so it would be a nice rememberence(sp?) of him. Thanks Merle |

Not a problem, Merle. My dad planted a lovely one in our yard growing up, too.
Hey, can I ask you? Is there an airport in Greensboro, and if so, how far are you from the Cape Hatteras?

Well, since the pods won't happen until probably mid to late August, please (everyone) "mark your calendars" to send me a reminder notice :) Life often gets in the way of my good intentions, especially during the summer! As of now, we've got almost every weekend filled through mid August!
Please don't forget....because I will

LOL! I certainly will be sending you a reminder! I am really excited! I want to leave this duplex's yard much more beautiful when I leave than when I came. I love to pretty things up and I hope the next people will continue my work if it is pretty enough! And I can always take seeds with me to plant at my next place! Hopefully we will be here for 2 more years though so I can finish college.

Hi there! Mind if I muscle my way into this "conversation?" Will rose of sharon grow in dappled shade? I have a whole area behind the house that I would like to hide with something pretty, but I don't think there's enough sunlight for traditional roses. Any other suggestions? thanks-- Tracy |

While I don't call myself a Rose of Sharon expert, with all my volunteers that have popped up, I'm going to say they'll grow just about anywhere. The ones that seem particlarly hearty to me are the ones on the south side of my house which is almost all shade. But, the ones on the west side in full sun, grow just as well.
They are an all purpose plant, ladies, step right up!!!!

Oh Good! Then I can plant some in the front yard! We have some really great trees, but it would be great to fill in some spots between the trees!

Okay, this is jumping in a little late, but can I get in line for some seeds too. I would love to have some. My neighbor who is gone now had one and I loved watching it bloom. Her daughter dug it up and took it to her home. I think that was good for her. Thanks. Carol Sue
Life is short, enjoy every moment. |

Absolutely...I don't mind sharing...or sharon...whatever, I'll be glad to send seeds. Same rule of thumb on this...everyone send me a "reminder" towards the latter part of summer :)

So for ROS seeds, would it be better to wait and plant in spring or in fall? Oh lordy! I am already thinking of what to plant next spring! LOL

I've never started one from seed, Alee. But maybe you could try starting some indoors in late winter and then moving them outside. Then just experiment with just planting some in pots outside in the spring like anything else. And maybe throw some in the ground this fall, just to see what comes up. I'm sure between Jonni and myself, we could send you enough seeds to try any and all ways of propagation. LOL :D

Imagine a huge grin on my face! The more the merrier! I would LOVE to "fence" out my neighbors from my yard. I'm sorry- but seriously people! You have your own yard to potty your dogs in! Leave mine alone! I have no problems with people strolling through or even walking their dogs back there- but at least clean up your messes! I spent a lot of time and effort training my dog to go in one certain spot... Now I am afraid to go out there without watching where I am going.
So I guess that is a long way of saying- I'll take all you've got!
Hugs!
Alee

I've got Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus, Family Malvaceae) out the wazoo! Birds have pooped out babies all over our property, and there are always sprouts right around the main culprit, which for years have been slugging it out with the offspring of ancient lilacs for domination of our east side yard and gravel driveway. The largest, probably oldest bush has two different colors of single blossoms; mallows have both male & female flowers on the same plant, so I guess they can do that all by themselves! Pretty cool, huh?
Anyway, if anybody wants to try a rooted "buggy whip" through the mail, I'm game to give it a try, in exchange for whatever the postage on something like that would run. I imagine you'd want to plant it right about now, in a partly shady, moist area.
R of S is soothing medicine for sore throats, by the way. You make tea from the crushed flowers. It has the same effect as Slippery Elm lozenges. |
