I am a shuttle tatter, but recently have tried needle tatting thanks to MJ's lovely Stitching book. So my question is this. When shuttle tatting the shuttle thread is for the rings and the ball thread is for the chains. Is it the same for needle tatting? It was kind of hard to tell in the stitching book because all it says is how to flip the threads after closing a ring etc. and it's hard to tell from the pictures exacly which thread you are working off of.

Hi Daisy,
Unlike shuttle tatting, needle tatting is worked solely off of the “ball thread.” This is true for both rings and chains. Our expert, Katy King, would be willing to answer any further questions you may have. I can be your liaison. Good luck!!!!!

How fun..I want to learn to tat soon...thinking I may start with needle tatting. Is it alot easier than shuttle?

It sounds like it should be easier than the shuttle tatting- I am excited to learn to tat too! I have a ball of crochet string- Do you think I could use this to tat with?

Yes, Aunt J, the needle tatting is easier and MJ's instructions are perfect. I have this week already taught 3 of my friends to tat!Her pictures are very descriptive and I really like the written instrucions as well. I like the reminders of when to tie knots after rings and chains, things that are easily forgotten by a beginner.
Alee, you can start off with crochet thread but you will want to try smaller thread once you get the hang of it. With large thread you use the large needle, with small thread use one of the smaller needles.

My sis in law was over (she just moved here from calif a couple months ago and works full time so I don't see her much) and she reminded me that SHE tats (very well too!!) and does bobbin lace too! So..sometime here soon I am going to have to have a chapter meeting and have her demonstrate it to us and ( a tatting workshop maybe) and she will have to be a new member too. I have never lived near her before and now she is right across town (which is still within walking distance in OUR town..haha)
Where can I get tatting thread? Do places like Walmart (ugh..I know..but we are in the boonies here) have it? If not I will order online for sure to have it ready for when I learn. I think my sis in law only needle tats. Hey....Sunshine..maybe we can get YOU to come down and show us shuttle tatting??? I am excited to learn.
I am off to a little league game...with my socks I am almost done knitting in Grace Gerber's lovely yarn (alpaca) I will post a picture later.

| With needle tatting, you choose so much thread for the needle then the rest is from the ball. This is how I learned to tat. My question iso this: patterns do not say to allow a certain amount of thread to begin the work. Why is that? Is there a rule of thumb on how much to start out with when the pattern does not say? I just learned and have had no training on tatting. I really love it. |
