Do you think I'm crazy to atempt making a skirt without a pattern? I have this skirt that I love. And I have this fabric that I also love and it's the perfect materail for a skirt. The skirt is very simply made. I suppose I could just go out and buy a pattern but I really like this skirt I would like to copy it. I'm not one to ever follow a pattern, I just see something I like and go for it, it usually works out, except this vest that I tryed to make a few weeks ago and it didn't work out so now I'm nervous about making this skirt. I only have so much of this fabric and I don't know if I could find more of this fabric, it was a hand-me-down from my Sister-in-law. I've ever really made any serious clothing only costumes. What do think, any suggestions?

Melissa,
I suggest that you lay out the vest on a piece of newspaper, then trace each piece... back, then sides. The back will go on a fold, so keep this in mind. Add 5/8" for a seam allowance, mark the buttonhole placements, any darts (if it is fitted), etc... if there is an interfacing, then trace a separate piece for this. You will have just created your own pattern. If you're leary about cutting it out of the material,....then first pin the paper vest pieces together and try it on.... see if it fits as you want... if not make adjustments.

My grandma sewed without patterns all the time..and she did just what Lori suggested..made her own patterns of a sort with newspaper. She sewed them right up on the machine and tried them on the person who the garment was to be for. She never seemed to save those patterns though, and did it over each time. Would make sense to hang on to them for future garments. I always thought it was such a neat, frugal idea.

Skirts are pretty simple without a pattern. I could never attempt a dress, or a shirt, without one or at least a shirt to model it by. As soon as I have a place to call home I do have a neat shirt that I love to wear and want to make an everyday version of it. I think I figured out how to do it without too much trouble too :)

Melissa- Skirts are pretty easy, check and see whether it is on the straight grain or bias. That will make a big difference how you use your fabric. If it's just a simple skirt with 2-4 pieces and or waistband turn it inside out and from seam to seam is what you would trace to make the pattern or if you're feeling confident just pin and cut out. I am a big fan of grocery bags opened for patterns , they are much more durable than tissue paper and last quite well. I just did this with a sundress I have had so long it is threadbare but I used it to make a new pattern. Good luck, just holler if you need more help!
