I got a book in the mail today. I've ordered another one but it's not here yet. The one I got today is Bobbin Lacemaking by Doris Southard. It must be me. But I'm not understanding how to use the pattern/pricking pattern/graph paper. Too much "stuff" it seems like. I've only skimmed over it and not actually sat down and tried it yet. But I think I'm stuck on the pattern thingy and what to do to get started.   grrrrr

Doris southard is not a beginner book unless you have a teacher.
try these two books
The Torchon lace Workbook by Bridget M. Cook ISBN 0-312-02119-4
Introduction to Bobbin Lacemaking by Roemary Shepherd ISBN 0-916896-65X

If need be in time I might be able to do some basic tutorials but for anything beyond that a teacher should be next to you. The books I mentioned all the patterns are pretty much begginner patterns. But they should be worked in order. SO as you learn the skills build on themselves

Thanks so much! I've already ordered "The Torchon Lace Workbook". Thats the one that hasn't come yet. If I can't get the hang of it, I'd be happy to pay for some kind of teaching. I'm a mess. I know the stitches, I understand that part a little. I just don't know what to do with the pattern, and pricking it and putting it on the board, I'm like brain dead. It's very frustrating. I see the pics in the book about how they got theirs all pinned down and stuff but I don't know how to even approach the pattern thing.

Before you work a pattern you prik it. to do this take anyold needle insert it into the end of an ( the eye goes in the knief receptical) exacto knief tool if you do't have a priking tool this will make one. Now lay your patern on your board ( pillow) and punch the needle into evey dot on the pattern. Now your pattern is pricked and ready to be attached to your pillow. Do you have a flat pillow or a boulster.
Make sure you needle goes in straight up and down no angles in to the paper (cardstock is best) also best to get clear plastic to cover it with. Just the stuff you buy to cover shelves that has a sticky back but you want it clear and it goes on the right side of the work. (contact paper)

I have a flat pillow for now. About the contact paper, would it be possible to use the plastic sheets that go in binders? Prob not but I have some of those is why I asked. After I prik the pattern, do I just pin it with a couple pins at top of page to anchor it to pillow? Thanks soooo much, you've helped me understand a bunch already!!!

Contact paper not view sheets the view sheets will move the contact paper is for making the paper stronger and last longer also so the pins have a little more resisitence from wiggling. When inserting pins place them in straight up and down also just like the needle. To place pricking on the pillow yes pins placed in the corners at the top and bottom.
Next step is to place pins in the starting spaces of the pricing and start hanging your bobbins. Have your learned to wind bobbins yet try not to touch the thread with your hands while winding. There are special tricks for this hard to explain with out a visual. Best to touch your thread with your hands as ;little as possible to not at all. I know this sounds weird. But the oil on your hands can make your thread get dirty and tough to clean as you don't scrub lace.

Hmmm I never thought about winding the bobbins and not touching the thread. I've already wallered 'em to death, lol. Do you work from left to right on the pattern or follow the line? Does that make sense?

I work a little of both it is a preferance until you get to stitches that require other stitches to be done first. For set up I always go left to right. When I am working the pattern it is what ever makes the most since at the time. I know that wasn't clear but it will be as you get farther into it set up left to right for now.

Sunshine do you have any pics on your blog where your just setting up, or starting out on the bobbin lace. So I can see what it looks like to begin? You've been such a great help, I thank you soooo much and I'm sorry I keep drilling you. Your a very patient person.

It's the Bobbin Lacemaking book and it's Lesson 1. Also, where is the best online store to purchase needle tatting supplies? I found one where the Step by Step needle tatting book was on sale for 10 dollars and can't find it now. lol

I buy mine at a local store so I don't really buy my needle like that online.
But I do know that handy hands has a lot of supplies so try there they also have on line tutorials for more advanced things like a cludy which can replace a chain in a pattern

Miki I am stuck and havent begun it yet! Ha.
I had my hubby to drill the 1/8 inch holes in my bobbins
I got some glass beads to string onto the end of the bobbins with the hole in them
For the pillow. Here is an idea. I have a pillow with which is suppose to be for reading.
I am going to use it for my bobbin lace making ; if I ever learn it !! Ha.
The people who I got my kit for ( victora trading compangy) said that this was a surprisingly easy craft? Yea, right.
Have any of them tried it? If they did they would not say it was easy. Ha.
I have the book with the butterfly on it.
I did do the bookmark. I got half way down and decided to quit until I got the bobbins fixed cause they were contiually in the way.
Oh, Miki,another thing, I am going to use no 10 bed spread cotton to learn with at first. I am also using the colore thread as to better see the lace with

Super useful tips, I think, as I haven't tried yet, but sounds super helpful. Still looking at bobbins in package. Reading book. Pondering. Beginning to go crosseyed. Gonna take a break. :) Growing admiration for lace and lace makers.
