After seeing the pictures in The Stitching Room I wanted to try my hand at tatting. I have looked everywhere locally and can't find tatting needles. Does anyone have a suggestion?

I also believe I seen them at AC Moore not long ago. And it seems like I have bought mine from Michaels once too. I know though when I have ordered online I got them from Barbara.
My first ones I bought at Silver Dollar City in Branson Mo though. I know they sell them around at different craft stores though from time to time, especially Barbara's tatting kit (comes with 2 books and I beleive 3 or 4 needles and some other little stuff). |

Never heard of AC Moore-
In a week or so I will make the big trip in to see if hobby lobby has them.
Michaels here doesnt have them- at least the search on local store says they dont.

Autumn, let me know how you do with tatting needles. I am hopeing to teach myself using a shuttle but am curious to know how the needles work too! I found an awesome fiber catalog that has all kinds of knitting, weaving, spinning, tatting etc products in it. It is lovely catalog.

Have you found any yet, Autumn? The ones I found at Michaels were in the clearance, so maybe they aren't going to carry them anymore. But Hobby Lobby had the exact same needles. It is a set of four different sizes for about ten bucks.
Angie, I have no idea how the shuttles work, but I love tatting with needles. You should definitely give it a try. It's very easy to get the hang of. I just need to work on making everything uniform. It's very fun though. I would probably get back to it if I could get myself to quit making yo-yos. :) |

I havent made the trip to Lake Charles(town) to get those needles but I am working with an old needle probably some kind of yarn needle and #50 thread. Here's the good part- the instructions in MJ's book are written SO CLEARLY I got it right the first try. I need some practice on uniformity but it actually looked pretty good!!!

Hey Autumn!
I ran to Hobby Lobby on my lunch break and bought Handy Hands Tatting Needles...they come 3 different sizes in a pack plus an extra extra fine one...so you get 4 for $9.99. I hope the your Hobby Lobby carries them. Now, I just need to figure out how to use them...wish me luck.

| I couldn't find any tatting needles either so I bought 2 tatting shuttles which I have not tried to use yet. I need to track down the tatting needles because I like the instructions in the stitching book and think maybe I can do this. Probably have to go on line because the last several times I checked out ACMoore and Micheals,Hancock Fabrics, I couldn't find any. |

I started practicing with just a large needle- it will take some practice but seems relativly easy with good directions.
Hobby Lobby is on my list for errands on Thursday

| Well, I finally had a chance to give tatting a try. The directions in Mary Janes's Stiching Room are very helpful. I was surprised that I could do it. I did have little trouble taking it off of the neddle the first two times...after that it was starting to be fun...will play with it again tonight after chores... |

I got my needles today! :)
Haven't been home long enough to give it a try yet,though.
I found them at Hobby Lobby. I also bought a shuttle- just in case I decide to give that a try!

Hey there girls
I finally found the tatting needles and believe it or not I can do it. The pictorial in The Stitching Room are invaluable!!
I will try to post a picture in the next few days.
It is really easy once you understand the pattern of steps.
Has anyone else tried?
Julia weren't you going to give it a shot?

Yup! I taught myself to tat using MaryJane's "The Stitching Room" book. Does that mean MaryJane taught me? :) Either way it was wonderful and I taught myself how to do it while waiting in the airport on a trip home to Wyoming. It is so fun to do and is very stilling to the mind. Almost like meditation for me. I love it! I even taught my aunts and my dad while I was home!

Yea, that's right- Mary Jane taught both of us!
Now what will I put this lovely edging on?
I have 4-5 friends, young friends, that are expecting babies- maybe on sock edges or bibs? Any other ideas?

Autumn, I have not had a chance to! Just been very busy but I am looking forward to an up-coming 'nothing planned' weekend and hope to sit and practice! I am going to the Finger Lakes Fiber Arts festival in a couple of weeks. Annual event with tons of vendors, classes and demos on all the needle arts. I am thinking I will find someone there to give me a beginner class and then if (LOL!) I like it, I can stock up on supplies too! I will let you know!

O.K. _ No laughing!!!
I've been working at this for 2 weeks and finally figured out most of my blunders. I must have 10 short pieces , each with their own problems. 
But finally I think I have it!
