Could I stick my nose in here? I just got a 1919 Franklin Model Treadle machine. It needs some lovin' and some nails, but the detail in the wood and the metal pedal part wow! I can not wait to sew on it. Just wanted to share........

I finally got done cleaning up the woodwork, and the machine itself looks to be in pretty good shape. My husband is gone for a couple of days so maybe I'll have a chance to work on it some more. I got a new drive belt and am ready to put it on--I'm just afraid of cutting it too short or screwing up the staple when I put it through the other side of the belt. Any tricks I should know about before I start? I won't be able to look at it till I get home from work tonight.

Hi girls, I have been wanting to get a treadle for quite some time now. I just don't seem to have any luck with a regular sewing machine, I don't need all the fancy stitches and bells and whistles. I just want something that sews a straight stitch. I was wondering where the best place to find them is and what is a good price ? I asked my dad to keep an ear out church in case anyone wanted to get rid of one.

Take care, Melissa.

Check antique malls or shops; CraigsList for your area. Put in a search for "sewing machine" in the for sale area of CL. People don't always spell treadle right nor do they even know to call it a treadle.(you'll see peddle/trundle/treddle etc) Also go to Ebay and do a search using distance, so that the items are listed by distance from your zip code. Many treadles listed are "for pick-up only" on Ebay, since they aren't equitable to ship, so you'll want to look at those in your area. Good price for a treadle varies according to region of the country one is in and the condition. I've paid from $25 to $100 tops. I wouldn't go higher than that here, because they are plentiful in that range. Your area may be different just because PA is an antiquers haven. Just start checking locally and you'll get a feel for what is a good price and what you may be willing to pay.

I have a White treadle, from 1918, still in wonderful shape, and even sewable (is that a word?) If only one of you who know how to work one could come and teach me. Mine even has the original leather belt, and an inlaid wood yardstick on top. It looks great in my guest bedroom, and was purchased by my grandmother. Sigh........

Hmmmm.....visit Kathie, she's near Tampa Bay and has a treadle(s). If you can
sew on a regular machine, you can sew on a treadle. Just have to pump your feet back and forth to make it run. ;)

Bonne, thanks for the advice. I was thinking I had to pay an arm and a leg to get one.

Take care, Melissa.

I got my treadle! And woudln't you know it. My peach tree is LOADED with peaches - every night after work I'm peeling and freezing and jamming peaches, PLUS i got gifted about 40 lbs of grapes today so guess who gets to make grape jam for 2 days too?? As soon as my harvesting/canning is done, I'll get to it....figure it all out!

Bonne, the missing shuttle (from ebay) has been located and is supposedly coming my way now...let's hope so!! !:)

There are many Sew and Vac parts sites online. You may be able to match up a foot that will fit.
Ebay is a good source for sewing machine parts as well. The important part is going to be where it screws on. I have 3 Singer treadles that don't use interchangeable feet~they all connect to the needle bar differently, so even though they are "Singers" it doesn't mean they use the same feet.
First off, determine whether it is a low shank or high shank http://www.clotilde.com/pages/which_foot.html

I'd never heard of a "Kohler" but on researching it, Kohlers look to be German made.

Terri, where did you land such a gem? On the other hand, since they aren't plentiful
(like Singers and Whites)in the US, you may have some issues getting something to properly fit. Unless
they can use a generic foot. I really don't know anything about them though.

Maggie, I'm so excited for you to get treadlin'~ all in due time! Take pics of your knitted gifts though~I can
use the eye candy. ;)
