I have a soap saver hanging in my small laundry room. I got it on eBay years ago.

Judith, was that from a time when lye soap was used for everything? I remember it cleaned the clothes, and the dishes. But it washed our hair and was our bath soap. It was used for scrubbing floors (back when they were wood floors) and cleaning all around, everything that needed a scrub.

We still use lye soap for just about everything. I've been making soap for the family for about 25 years. It works well for everything from floors to hair. I make cold process soap with vegetable oils but my parents used to make soap every time they got a half beef for the freezer. They would trim off the fat and make soap with the beef fat. They did hot process and boy did the house smell horrible on those days.

Judith - Is your soap recipe easy? Never have made soap. And I always thought Lye Soap was a harsh soap?

I think it's easy now, but I do remember the first time I made it I could have written a comedy skit about it. Lye soap can be gentle enough for your face or as harsh as you want it to be for laundry, etc.; it just depends on the formulation.

My grandma used bacon grease. Of course she strained it. My mother also used bacon grease. She was invited to come to the school, where I was teaching little kids. The teacher who invited her was a Jr. High teacher. She made soap as the kids watched.

Judith, my mom had one of those and used it when she used to do her laundry. She would put the slivers of soap in it and leave it in the wringer washer while she was filling it. Then when the water was filled she would swish it around and take it out to add the clothes. She was never one to waste anything and was always repurposing things.
