Well, March came in here on the wind! Hoping that means it with go softly in April for Easter. Easter falls on the 4th this year which would have been my sister's birthday.

March is definitely living up to its reputation for being a windy month. The sun is shining today though and that gives me hope for Spring soon! My daffodils are popping up more. No blooms yet of course.

What is everyone planning for this merry month of March?

We had windy weather today too. Temp was 48. Very warm form Minnesota at this time of year. Our 59th wedding anniversary is St. Patrick's day and on our 50th anniversary, the temp was 80 degrees. A record. My hyacynths are up 3 inches next to the house.

The title of the kitchen history book is , America’s Kitchens by Nancy Carlisle, Melinda Talbot Nasardinov.. Maybe your local library will have a copy you can order to look at or find one on Amazon in the used category. Because slave owners never had to worry about food preparation, women were completely lost after the Civil War and slaves were freed. Those with enough money could hire women to cook but many had to simply learn from scratch. That led to women having to change their entire day in order to raise a family , cook, and manage food storage for cold months on a crash course basis. The outcome has resulted in the amazing skills and recipes that our grandmothers and great grandmothers passed down in our families. Plus, in the late 19th Century, women took a very scientific and educated look at how kitchens were set up, how it use new gadgets and stoves previous open hearths, and maximize space and new technology to free up time for women to do other things. Another wonderful book that MaryJane referred to in one of her books is The American Woman’s HOme or Principles of domestic Science by the two sisters, Catherine Esther Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe. The first date of publication was 1869. This book is a must have if you are interested in how American home life was taught to young women and embraced by generations as a go to manual for everything about the home. It was also the first manual on how to raise babies and children to be healthy too. Just fascinating!! What is also interesting is how much information is still valid and useful today in 2021.

Happy March everyone and Happy Anniversary Bonnie!

I do believe that March is going to bring progress to me soon, as in all surgeries may be this month or April.
My clearances are getting started and I am doing a pre-op visit again with my clinic soon. Yahoo.

Love you all!

Good news Darlene! Hope it all goes smoothly for you. Our days are full of mud and sunshine, both welcome as it means spring is getting much closer. I am gathering up my seed starting supplies to get some peppers, petunias, leeks and onion seed started. They always take much longer to get going than the rest of my garden plants. With our bathroom project finished I am moving on to the next project, the office. That just needs new flooring, paint and some shelves in the closet so should be quick and easy. We butchered pigs a month or so ago and I kept some of the fat to render. I canned it yesterday. This has been an experiment to see if it works, so far so good, but I am unsure as to how long it will keep. I like lard for pastry crusts and deep frying donuts. Does anyone else use it for anything?

Julie,
I look forward to starting a garden again. Not this year as I am unsure of our location.
I don't use lard I use butter for my pastry and I don't fry anything. Pampered chef has a doughnut pan for baking them. I rarely make doughnuts though.
Finally heading to service today. It's been since December 20th and before that
September I think. Looking forward to it.

I have donut baking pans I use as well, but when I get a craving for my grandmas homemade donuts, only making them the old fashioned way will do.Donuts are a favorite of the grands and the farmer so I often bake just a half dozen for them.

My mom preferred to make them that way also, using her grandma's recipe. They are so good. I think the pans are for more like batter but her recipe was rolled out and cut. Now I'm getting hungry for those doughnuts! Lol

Julie I use lard with butter I like the flavor better. I don’t fry very often so I enjoy it when I do!
when I cook or fry anything it keeps a long time in cool storage.
Thank you everyone for your encouragement, it really helps.
I haven’t had a donut for a long time sounds delicious! Enjoy some for me.

Have a wonderful Sunday!

I have donut pans and cutters but seldom use them anymore. When my aunt used to make bread she would take part of the dough, pat it out flat and fry it. Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. She called them "shoe soles". Yummy. I must have made hundreds for my kids when they were young. I always used to use crisco and lard for frying, back when they weren't unhealthy. Now I use oil. Just doesn't taste the same. My grandmother and aunts always used shortening and lard; I wonder how they all managed to live well into their 90s.

Lard is still animal fat and oil and shortening is mostly soy now, unless olive oil or canola or specialty oils. I quit when soy took over oils. My friend had cancer and her doctors told her to stop eating all soy products. It is in everything! It messes with hormones.
That’s why I use butter and lard and olive oil.
Mostly butter.

My daffodils are getting taller. Gives me hope that warmer temps are in store for us soon. The other thing Spring brings that I am not looking forward to is my dd and family are moving then. I am going to miss them terribly. They have been here since my granddaughter was 2 and her brother 5 mos old. The youngest was born here so it will be hard at the least. Hoping it won't be long before we can move close to the other grandchildren. We would move with the older grands but they are heading to Fl. and we lived there before and found that far south is not for us. Things change just as the seasons do. Though I am not big on change I know it has to happen.

Denise, I know it must be hard thinking about your family moving soon. I think as we age, big changes can be tough. Getting into a totally new routine in a strange place is difficult and seems harder as we age. We humans are comfort creatures.

They will be moving south while we are planning to move north and west to Ohio. Probably about 2100 miles or thereabouts.

Oh, Denise....I am sorry! I agree with Winnie...change is harder the older that we get. I know how I would feel if my daughter moved away. I will keep you in my prayers.

We got to have the 3 kids for the morning and some of the afternoon. Their parents had appts. We had a good time. We always do. The youngest wants to stay by himself Friday night. We haven't had him overnight alone since he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes almost 4 years ago. His mom is making herself available if need be. He has an alarm if it gets low and she also gets the alarm on her phone. Don't know if spending more time with them is going to make it harder when they leave or not. The oldest is going to go visit her cousins with us when we go. Glad she will get to see them before she moves. Can you tell I don't like change?
