It is my favorite season! We still have a month before the calendar says it's so but
I've been sitting here dreaming of fall. I love the early morning best. Seeing the morning mist and smelling the mixture of leaves and wood smoke. I love the bright colored leaves and picking and drying apples. Cooking for cooler weather and of course the apple and pumpkin festivals.
I do a lot of my canning in the fall. Making the house smell good while cooking apple butter and applesauce. Decorating for fall. Making things cozy around the house.
What do you like most about fall?

Denise, Count me in as a lover of autumn. Sept is still hot here in Texas but now and then there's a cool breeze out of the north bringing hope of cooler weather.

By late summer shadows have all but disappeared unless you are standing under a large tree where's there shade. Sometime in Sept the shadows start to lengthen and the season of long shadows begins. I love to watch week after week - month after month as the shadows become longer and the air is brisk and cool. Fall brings on my favorite season - the season of long shadows.

I love decorating for the fall. Going to Kelly's fruit & veg stand for the right pumpkins and large gourds are among my favorite things to do. This year I may get two yellow mums to put on my front porch.

When it cools down I will open up my Yellow Rose Cottage for canning and drying. Of course I will decorate it for fall too. Love the colors of fall and the layering of clothes. Fall and winter clothes have always been my favorites and I have always spent most of my clothing budget on them. Just talking about them makes me want to put on my favorite flannel shirt and turn the A/C way down but I won't. My flannel shirt will just have to wait for that first blue norther to blow out of OK across the Red River and into Paris. Dreaming of fall lifts my spirits and helps me to hang on one more day in this oppressive heat. One thing I know for sure after our long hot summer comes the season of long shadows.

Autumn is my favorite season. It is usually still pretty warm until mid October. They call it Indian Summer! Why? I have no idea.
Then we have the most wonderful days! The sun shines but the cool breeze makes for crisp mornings and pleasant afternoons.
I enjoy decorating for autumn, when I put my scarecrow in a lawn chair, under the big oak tree in the driveway...It takes a while for everyone to get used to him. At first glimpse they think it is a stranger sitting there.
Next comes a wreath for the back door...and lots of autumn co!or inside. Everyone comes into the house through the back door.
Once again we can sit outside, anytime of the day. I love to read with a cup of hot spiced tea, or mulled apple cider, while sitting out side.
My birthday is in October, as was my mother's and my daddy's.
Usually by early November we have a frost. So we scurry around to gather whatever is left in the garden. Mowing is usually over, firewood is stacked and last year I learned to stack some in the garage/barn to keep it dry. The leaves fall like rain! We usually have autumn showers now and then.
I love the smell of wood smoke too, Denise. I also love to find pecan trees that are dropping their nuts for us to collect. We have squirrels that steal from the tree in the driveway, leaving us with none. But usually the tree by the arena has some. Since we only get a good crop every three or four years...they are really enjoyed.
I love the naked trees, after their leaves have fallen away, because you can see the structuure of each kind of tree.
Northers come, frequently. The sky gets darker in the north, then the wind comes from the north, it is a cold wind and it blows hard!!! So we rush around to get ready for the cold snap or spell. Then we have a respit. A period of a couple of days up to about a week before another one comes. Finally winter takes over.
Our fall color is minimul, but browns can make beautiful arrangements.
The Moon of the Red Grass is November. Another old Indian term. All of the wild grasses beside our lane turn dark burgandy. The days are usually crisp, sweater weather! Finally!!!
It is time to make pies and Apple cake, cook stews and soups, cornbread and all kinds of yumminess.
Autumn, that is when God prepares His world for rest, peaceful rest!
God bless each of you, my sweet farm sisters!

Fall and/or Autumn are my favorite seasons. I love the cooler weather, the beautiful golds and reds of the turning leaves (not so much in Texas as in Illinois where I grew up), and the wonderful breezes that often mean putting on a sweater or long-sleeved shirt. I don't decorate a lot, but I do have a fall quilted wall hanging, several ceramic pumpkins, and a fall banner to help bring the fall colors into the house.

I won't be decorating for Christmas this year, since we will be in Germany 2/3 of the month of December. YAY! So the fall decorations will carry me through to January.

I agree with everyone's comments about Fall! A beautiful and colorful season.

Glad to see I have some sisters of fall! Yes, to all you have said about the wonderful time of year. Dressing for fall and winter are my favorite too. I love to collect the leaves and acorns and such to decorate inside with. We too have some unusually warm days in September and October but at least I know it is going to get cooler before it gets hotter again.

I love that usually in mid August, there is a sense of autumn in the air when I'm outdoors. I first noticed it probably forty years ago. I can't explain it...but it happens each and every year. This year I was putting something in my compost bin, underneath the burr oak when I felt it...about two weeks ago.

Fall and Spring are my favorite times of the year. Fall is still a long way off for us but I am anticipating that certain day in
September when I open the door in the morning and smell the advent of Fall. It's indescribable but I know it immediately. Our leaves usually don't fall until November but I sure do love our October weather.

Our October weather here is gorgeous. It is my favorite month as far as weather. Just perfect. November tends to be rainy. September I love but we still get warm days. Not near as warm as now though.

Good Morning everyone! You know it goes without saying that I love the Fall season best!! Right now it is just awful here in north central Florida! Last weekend , over 30 inches of rain fell is places just west of us, over a 3 day period, and we had about 5 inches of rain when we returned Sunday night. It is hot and humid and the forecast is for the same pattern all through next week. sigh. However, I decorated my apple tree before I left and the 2019 batch of Pumpkin Spice coffee came in right before we went to NC.

Before I left for NC, I was busy completing all of my apple goodies for my upcoming annual giveaway and apple swap on the main forum. I have had apples on my brain since the day after my birthday, which is my official start to Pre-Apple/fall season. After July 7, I am sick and tired of Summer because it has already been hot and humid for 2 1/2 months and will be so for another 3 months. Right now, the place is like a swamp; standing water, high humidity, thunderstorms every day, rain, rain, rain! Did I mention RAIN???

I loaded up a paper box I got in Canada with a bag of apples from the store and made up a cup of my favorite coffee and had a moment of pretending it was Fall which the AC kept the house cool.

A tradition that I started many years ago, is to decorate for Fall every September 1. If I waited until it got cool, it would be Thanksgiving and everyone usually has Christmas in their view!! I know I mentioned several times before that weather guidelines for predictions of what is to come divides the seasons differently from what we do using the equinoxes and solstices. In meteorological terms, Fall begins September 1 and runs until November 30. Winter is Dec. 1- Feb 28 or 29, Spring is March 1-May 31, and Summer is June 1`- August 31. The reason for these dates is because the tilting of the Earth, the length of the days, and the huge winds that determine fronts, high cells, low cells, ocean temps and much more are more clearly grouped into the months just listed. In order to capture a better picture for predicting weather outcomes, as we understand them from our local forecasts, the seasons are best grouped as outlined. To make a long story short..................starting Fall on September 1 works perfectly for me!! I tell myself that NOW it is officially Fall and I can pull out all of the pumpkins and decorations that I love so much. I also never take anything down until it is December 1 because I want to enjoy EVERY SINGLE DAY OF FALL!! LOL!!!

Of course, I keep a few fall items out all year long; a crock here or there, a scarecrow, an abundance of apple things(ALWAYS!) , and coffee in one of my fall themed mugs.

I am pleased to share that Fall is indeed coming, even to those of us in the South! While in Asheville, NC, the late Summer apples are now ripe and available, I found a stray Sassafras bush, on a rural road, covered in orange and yellow leaves. They always turn early it seems. Then, I saw large White Oak trees with big acorns growing, an abundance of wild yellow asters along roads up in the mountains, and other small little signs of changes coming when I look carefully. Also, the peach and blackberry crops are now almost finished and filling produce stands around the mountains. Summer harvests are at their peak...which means they are about completed for the season. Despite the heat and days ahead of heat...................we will soon be able to say, Happy Fall Y'All!!

Winnie, that's a lovely photo!

I am going home today and see what I can get ready to put out for fall decor. I always decorate with colonial/primitive so they go very well with anything fall.
I have been out on jobs with JT and we've stopped at Cracker Barrel for lunch.

Fall is my favorite season! I got up the other morning and thought....only 11 more days and August is officially OVER!!! Thank goodness!
I love everything about the season...cooler mornings and evenings, the smell of the air, pumpkins, apples, baking and making the house smell yummy, decorating with my fall quilts and pumpkin collection, wearing cooler weather clothes. I usually start decorating Sept. 1, even though it's 3 more weeks of summer officially. As far as I'm concerned, Aug. 31 is MY official last day of summer!

One thing I miss about fall - When I grew up in The Chicago suburbs, the Sunday Chicago Tribune Magazine always had a picture (really two pictures) of Fall - sunset and nighttime. It is called Injun Summer. It was the cornstalks as seen at sunset and at night, with Indians dancing around their teepees in the moonlight. It's hard to describe, but I will always remember that picture. I found a copy of the picture(s) on line; here it is. You can google Chicago Tribune Newspaper Fall Picture to find it and maybe be able to read it. LOL!

Linda --I finally found the picture online. It was printed every year for 70 years but apparently in 1992 there were too many complaints about it. Here is what I read:

"The "Injun Summer" era ended on Oct. 25, 1992, when it appeared for the last time. The drawings may be timeless, but the text had outlived its day. Complaints had been voiced for several years about its offensiveness to Native Americans. Wisps of smoke have continued to rise from those smoldering leaves, however. Every fall, some readers complain that they miss it.

Sometimes I think there is just too much "political correctness".

I'll wager that it was snooty white folks, rather than Indians who objected.
My grandmother had some Indian blood mixed in with her French bloodline. My new grandson has two Indian tribes in his ancestry.I've always taught my school children as well as my grandkids to be respectful of Our Indian 'forefathers'.
I admire their skills and handiwork. At 13 we were invited into a Hogan, dirt floor swept clean, with woven sleeping mats rolled up neatly in a stack. We watched as the women wove rugs and blankets with beautiful designs. We were somewhere near the Grand Canyon.
At 16, on a week long stay at Glorieta with a church group, we drove to Santa Fe one evening. We saw Indian Artisans sitting on the sidewalks, which were covered, with the most beautiful things they had made.
I will stop there, because it I don't, I will go on and on about how badly the white man treated them. It makes me sad!

We are Mohawk in my family. It is an odd mixture we are, I have found through my genealogy. I think because so many have struggled to get where they are is the reason offense is taken on so easily. When you think about it there have been many who have had to struggle through. Not only Indian but also the Irish as well as the African americans. Many more also I'm sure. I personally don't take offense as that is how the Indians tribes lived at one point.

Those who have destroyed the commemorative statues in the south, are narrow minded people. We are all most all descendents of civil war soldiers. Those idiots that think those statues are offensive to them...need to learn from history. If we do not study and learn what happened in this country long ago...We will end up in that same situation one day. Those who want to be communist, socialists...make me sick. All they do is run their mouths. Their heads are empty. I can not stand to hear them!

I agree to all - the statues are our history and that can never change, good or bad. The future can change and that depends on how we teach our children and grandchildren.

I have a mongrel ancestry including Native American and Confederate. The Injun Summer article used the word Redskins, which probably was the inflammatory word to the objectors. The author was writing about his childhood in the 1870s when Redskin was a common and acceptable word. When I was a child it was proper to refer to African-Americans as Colored. Then that wasn't proper anymore and Negro was the correct word. Then it was Black and then then it was Afro-American, now it is African American. It's been the same with the people formerly known as retarded. Statues, flags and words are part of our history and should be taken in context. I refuse to be offended if someone calls me Injun, Redskin, or Bohunk - I'm not that thin-skinned.
"Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it" -- I can't remember who said it but it's very true.
When I was working in the library we had a display case and one of the monthly displays was of African American memorabilia; Aunt Jemima cookie jars, Uncle Ben's rice canister, etc. The NAACP picketed the library and demanded the exhibit be removed.
OK -- I'll get off my soapbox now

Back to the Fall question, I have noted ever since I joined MJF, that Farmgirls everywhere in the US write about how they love this season. Many , like us, write about getting a few decorations out in August because they just want to enjoy the sight of colored leaves and pumpkins. It seems almost like Fall generates an entire new vibe in life . By that I mean, the cooler days, the rich colors, the change in daylight length draws people in. A page gets turned , in the year, when Fall arrives. We reach for juicy red apples and sweet hard squashes at farmer stands. The bounty of summer gardens is past and many pantries are full of favorite canned goods. We open our windows and pull out heavy quilts for beds again and think about putting on a slow cooking soup or stew for supper. These sentiments seem to arise from Farmgirls in all parts of our country without previously talking together. Have any of you noticed the same Fall response?

While every part of the US experiences the fall season differently, the excitement and long happy memories of celebrating seem universal. I am curious as to why this seems true? What ideas do you have as to a reason why so many people love Fall?

Judith,
The hen house is different in the posts than the main forum. We all start over just in the henhouse.

Winnie,
I have noticed this but I wonder if someone mentioning it starts the ball rolling. It does seem that Fall is a favorite season of so many farm girls. I know for many it means harvest and coming to the end of a lot of work. A transition to a season of rest. I look forward to all of the things you mentioned as well. Each season as its own joys and Fall and Spring seem to be the transition periods to the other two.
Fall the cooling off from the hot summer and Spring the warming after cold winters. I know this doesn't apply to all areas of the country but it still seems to usher in the other two.
I hope others will chime in on this as I'd love to see others thoughts.

Denise~~
