I just posted my May Learning Together and mentioned that I am leaving for Italy tomorrow and returning home May 13. Hubby and I are going on a planned tour that reaches from Rome to the Italian Alps. He is already over in Rome and I elected to not do the pre-trip and meet him and the rest of the group in Florence. We have been looking forward to this for about a year. As always, if I have WiFi and time, I will check-in here and say Hi.

In the meantime, Happy Farmgirl Jubilee next weekend here at MJF, and Happy Mother's Day!! I still have some packing and little stuff around here to do. Always a check-list when getting out of town for a big trip!

Winnie, have a wonderful time! Hoping you get lots of rest and relaxation as you taken all that Italy has to offer. My dd and husband are planning a trip there for their anniversary next year. JT and I will have the kiddos that week.

I stayed home today due to what I guess is a sinus problem. Not really sinuses but my eyes have been very watery for two days. Yesterday was just the right eye but when I woke this morning the other eye was like that too. I took some benadryl. Seem to be worse in the morning and at night.

Today was beautiful. After the unexpected rain last night, it was sunny, so nice. After we had lunch Julie and Had came back to help Bapa figure out what was wrong with the washing machine. Every time I try to wash a load, the door locks and won't drain the water out. So since it was Julie's washer, until it locked down a few years ago, she knows it's quirks. After a couple of hours, they ordered a part and we went to try the gluten free coconut pie she had made.It was very rich and yum! Back home I fed my hens, gathered the eggs and found the first copperhead of the season...caught in the bird netting at the end of the pullet pen. I detest snakes! Especially poisonous ones! Then I planted five tomatoes and two jalapeno peppers, with a cracked egg in each hole. The egg is supposed to make them grow, grow, grow and set a lot of fruit. We shall see!

LOL! I've never heard of the egg in the holes when planting. Let us know if it works.
WHOA! Sorry about the snake. I hate all snakes and spiders. Ed just laughs sometimes when I see a spider.

I had not heard of an egg in the hole either but that's what Jess on Roots and Refuge does. She says it is awesome.
I asked my husband why Mr snake was so fat. He was 18" - 20" long but fat. My husband said he was probably eating mice.

Denise my husband came home Wednesday evening so hoarse. Then by Friday night he could hardly talk. We got some more Alkaseltzer night time tablets that you dissolve in water, and drink. He is much better today. He was taking some cough and cold capsules, but we have always had such good results with the fizzy tablets. My son is also sort of sick and Julie may be getting that way too. I tend to think the weather has a lot to do with our allergies and colds. We are in the rainy season now I guess. I think we have a chance of rain every day next week.

Never heard of the egg thing either. Did you kill the snake? I always say the only good snake is a dead one. I hate them more than anything. Well mice run a really close second. I detest both.
This is allergies I'm sure. Not too bad this morning. We are also to get rain this week. At least it washes the pollen away.

The bird netting killed the snake. It is the best thing since sliced bread. The snakes head goes into a little hole in the netting, then as the snake tries to advance of back out, he realizes he is trapped, because of the way their body moves.
Mice do run a close second for me too.
Allergies can change into something more, for me anyway.

Marilyn my sister, Penny, who lives in Lucas on two acres had the netting over her raised beds and a snake got caught in it. She no longer has the raised bed because shade took over so my BIL moves the netting around the trees to catch snakes - mostly copperheads.

A couple of years ago Penny was painting something with a spray can in her back yard when she saw a copperhead a couple of feet away. She was afraid to move so she sprayed it with the white paint and it slithered off. Sprayed white it couldn't hide so she hunted it down with a hoe and killed it. I think that's one of the funniest snake stories I have heard in a long time.

Maybe the cracked egg works the same way as burying fish with plants like the Indians showed the first settlers.

Sara,
I would never search out a snake to kill it. I can't stand the sight of them so I always get one of the guys to kill them. Same for mice! Guess I am just a big fraidy cat. lol.

I was thinking the same about the egg. It made me think of the fish too.

I usually call my husband to come with a pistol, but I could tell this one was dead, so I took a picture and sent it to my son and both girls, who were all gone. My son called, to get the story. Hadlee has said several times over the years that copperheads smell like dog poop! She has also said that when my son runs one over, he always gets out to be sure it is dead. I'm so glad he wears boots, because he steps on their head to be sure. Then he gets in the truck, after wiping his boots on the grass and ka!iche, but she always complains about the stench. So when I went out to feed on Saturday evening, I did not see one, but there was a smell. ... That was my warning. I guess I will never go out there again without looking all around.
I need to wrap our longest pen in bird netting too. It is the favorite of chicken snakes who get in the next boxes, eat the eggs, get full and take a nap.

I will agree, too, that I also don't like mice. My cat brings them to me someties, usually in pieces. Ed thinks it is funny that I'm scared of critters.

Marilyn, I may try the Alka-Seltzer. Woke up this morning fine except for the eyes and now I am sounding a bit hoarse. My daughter said the kids all had this last week when her husband was on vacation. Wasn't much of a vacation with them all sick. Though I think a couple were running fevers.

I like the fizzy tablets, but I only put about a quarter cup of water, then I drink some plain water. I sleep so good. Next morning I take a day time, non drowsy dose and my eyes don't water and my nose does not run.
