We used to have lots of fireflies around here. Not as many, but the ones we do see are beautiful.

The temperature is down in the 80's and a lot less humid here for a couple of days then back to hot.

The wild black raspberries are ready. Have enough to make a raspberry filled bundt cake tomorrow. I make at least one every summer. Already had a couple of mulberry pies and some rhubarb, strawberry and pineapple pies. I love using fresh berries from my yard. Blackberries will be next. Yay!

The heat wave has hit us! And why oh why is our less than a year old air conditioner not working!?!? I'm so thankful we do not deal with humidity!!! To top it off, one of our bucklings died, for no apparent reason! Sad day here at the Hudson's!

I was watching something on Facebook the other day and they were commenting on a bug that mimics the female lightening bug and kills the male. It wasn’t a pretty sight.

So sorry to hear about your buckling died Shannon, take care everyone, Try to stay cool

Happy Sunday evening everyone!! I got to take my bandage off today and just use a bandaid to cover the stitches. My hand is still sore but it feels so good to have more range of motion!! My birthday yesterday was nice and low key. My daughter took us to brunch and then I just did little chores and talked a lot on the phone with my brother and sister. Warren gave a wonderful present that was a painting of my beloved Mr.Bump kitty. A local friend and artist used some pictures Warren provided and truly captured the look of Bump's face. It is just wonderful and I am so happy to have it in my office now where I can see his little kitty face looking back at me!! LOL!!

Another wonderful surprise was a phone call from our Sara!! She received her copy of MaryJane's Milk Cow Kitchen book giveaway and called to let me know it arrived. It was so much fun talking to you , Sara! We have fun chatting here at the HenHouse all the time but to actually hear a person's voice for a chat is very special!! It was a great birthday surprise for me too!!

The heat, humidity, and endless rains continue down here. There is also a hurricane making it's way west towards us. I sure hope it just ends up out to sea and won't be bothering anyone. I can't believe that we are dealing with hurricanes already. It seems like yesterday we had awful Irma here!

Winnie I so enjoyed out chat but I am sorry I didn't think to ask about your hand or to wish you a happy birthday. My only excuse is I was just caught up in the moment and excitement over the book.

It's dusting day at my house. Just office/guest room and my bedroom to go. Wouldn't have so much to dust if I didn't like to hang pictures and odds & ends on the walls. Dusting and resting that's how my day is going.

I am thinking Fall ideas and reading this wonderful book, The Recipe Box, by Viola Shipman. The first chapter is titled, Apple Crisp.YOu know I am all in on this book!! LOL!! I will post more about it when I am finished but I think it could be a wonderful suggestion to put out there for celebrating the September Apple Festival at MJF!

Today my Hubby and I put up green and yellow beans, hamburger dill pickles, and banana peppers. Got laundry hung out and lots of dishes washed. Fried chicken for supper. Quite a busy day today. The garden is the best it's been in a few years. Tomatoes are just beginning to ripen. Think I will just do plain tomatoes this year. Then I can use them lots of different ways.

Winnie your Book sounds like a good one. Will have to look for it.

WOW! Lots of canning, Brenda. Ed bought some pickle spice "kits" and now I want to find some pickling cucumbers so I can make some bread and butter pickles. And pickles are easier than my first canning experience of jelly.

The Saharan dust that is settling all around here is really bad. I wonder how long this will last. I sure hope it doesn't last long.

We were not able to plant our garden until June 2. It is coming along nicely but canning will be down the road.
We have 70 feet of red raspberries and because of all the rain, we have a bumper crop. Pick in' like crazy.

Bonnie,
How great you are having such a good crop of red raspberries!
We are waiting for our blackberries here. We haven't had rain so I don't know how they will do this year.

Bonnie, great raspberry crop!!!
Denise, hope your blackberries make.

On my Dreaming of Fall Give-Away post I talked about making a hope chest. Well the box is out and the rusty old red wagon is in. I was sitting on my sideporch earlier with Annie when I saw my red wagon and thought it looked like fall. Since most of what I will buy will be outside stuff the red wagon can stay on the sideporch.

I put the two rag scarecrows that will go on frontporch last of August at each end of the wagon and the orange basket in the middle. Now to decorate the handle and my hope chest wagon will be all set.

Sara,
I have my grandma's. I used it for my hope chest and now it holds my mementos and memories. It is a Lane and smells so good when I open it.

Oh and we went to Hobby Lobby yesterday so my mil could find some fabric and of course all their fall items were out and on sale. Had a great time looking at it all and buying a few things to put out this year. I found this for my front porch.

Denise I remember that Lane was the cream of the crop when it came to hope chests. I had my aunt's (not a Lane) for years and when I moved to Paris into a smaller house I gave it to one of my sisters.

Junior and senior years in high school I worked after school and on weekends in a department store. By the time I graduated I had boxes of housewares and linens. After I graduated I worked in the office of a pickle factory and I bought a set of china for eight and set of cookware. These days I wonder if there are any young women who do that anymore.

Years ago I gave the china to my niece and now it's vintage and collectible. She has found serving pieces in shops and at auctions to add to her set.

Denise I was typing when you posted the picture of your pumpkin. Love it. Hobby Lobby has the best fall things and when they're on sale they're quite reasonable.

I thought it was hot here in the North Georgia Mountains, but we are faring pretty well compared to you all :(! Yesterday afternoon within a matter of two hours our temps cooled off and the humidity went way down. No rain, nothing, a cool front just blew through - so very thankful! This morning it was quite cool having breakfast on our front porch! Then we had to drive over the mountains to Clayton, GA to take our pup to the vet for his last ck up after his 2nd ACL surgery. Two hour drive each way, but beautiful :)! We have been working at our church camp for the last two weeks helping to cook dinner, Mon - Thursday, for 200+ campers and team. Taking tonight off! Tonight they will cook 100 hand tossed pizzas. One more week of camp next week, middle schoolers. one of our church families own an Italian Restaurant, and they come and do the pizzas :)! Yummy
Everyone stay cool - Fall is coming, hopefully sooner than later :)!

Denise, what a cutie to add to your porch this Fall!! 41 more days until September 1 which is the meteorological beginning of Fall, and technically we can pull out the fall decorations! After this miserable long hot summer, who is willing to join me in starting the fall decorating despite what the thermometer says?? LOL!!!
