All this talk about apple goodies for Sunday got me thinking. So I thought I'd start a recipe thread. Hope we didn't already have one.

Anyway I will share my Apple Pandowdy recipe of my grandmother's and I hope you all will share some of the recipes you've been talking about making.

Apple Pandowdy

Tart apples, sliced 1 1/2 qts.
Brown sugar, 2/3 cup
Nutmeg, 1/2 tsp.
Cinnamon, 1 tsp.
Molasses, 4 tbsp.
Water, 1/3 cup
Butter, 2 tbsp
Shortcake biscuit, 1/2 recipe

Combine apples, sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, molasses and water in a greased 1 1/2 qt. shallow baking dish. Dot with butter.

Prepare 1/2 shortcake biscuit recipe. Roll out to 1/4 inch thick to fit dish. Place on top of apple mixture.

Bake uncovered in a hot oven (400 degrees F.) 35 to 45 minutes or until biscuit is done and apples are tender.

Shortcake Biscuit Recipe
Flour, 2 cups
Baking powder, 3 tsp.
Salt, 1 tsp.
Sugar, 2 to 4 tbsp
Shortening, 6 to 8 tbsp
Milk , about 2/3 cup

Sift flour, measure. Add baking powder, salt and sugar, sift again.
Cut in shortening with pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse corn meal. Stirring it in with a fork add enough milk to make a soft dough or until mixture leaves the sides of the bowl and follows the fork; continue stirring until all of the flour disappears and mixture thickens.

Turn onto floured board; knead lightly for 1/2 minute. Turn smooth side up and roll out dough.

Enjoy!!

Sounds yummy, Denise. This is a little different than the Martha Stewart, but I think I like yours better. I like using molasses.

Wow, Denise, this recipe does look delicious!! Thank-you for sharing your recipe and I hope to make it soon for hubby and I.

Here is an apple pie filling that is simple and a bit different since it does not use cinnamon.

8 cups of peeled and sliced apples. You can use several varieties like Granny Smith, Macintosh, Jonathans, or local tart and firm apples.
3/4 tsp Nutmeg
3/4-1 Cup sugar
1 1/2 Tbsp butter

Mix apples with sugar and nutmeg

2 pie crusts either store bought of using your favorite recipe.

Place bottom crust in pie pan, fill with apple mixture, dot with butter , place other crust on top and crimp edges. Place several vents in the top and bake in a 375 degree oven 30-45 minutes or until crust is browned and apples are soft. Serve warm with your favorite topping.
