Here are our merit badge challenges for March, if you ecide to take them on....

March is National Nutrition Month, so let's focus on "Unprocessed Kitchen." I have already completed all three levels for this, so the other option I'm going to throw out there is "Know Your Food."

March is also National Craft Month... this obviously opens the door WIDE open for lots of different badges. I plan on focusing on the Expert level of Aprons, as well as Embroidery.

So who is joining me and what will your focus be?

I have done the Unprocessed Kitchen badges as well. I'm thinking of doing Know Your Food and ChillOver Come Over. I have some embroidery to finish for my Embroidery badge, so I can work on my pillowcases and get that wrapped up.

I am going to try REALLY HARD to finish reading "Beef" so I can apply for the beef badge. I started it last fall and it's been a struggle to get through it! I am not liking it and I'm not a fan of mythology....a fan of beef, yes!

Debbie - I HATED that book! In fact, I am pretty sure I wrote on my info for the badge that I hated that book ;) It was definitely a hard read!!! I'm not into mythology either, so that is probably why!

I hate having to finish a book you're just not into. That's how I felt about The Wings of the Dove. I know it's a classic, but I just couldn't get into it. Sometimes I wish for some of the books you have to read for badges, that it just would say "peruse through it and get the basic idea" instead of read the whole thing.

That is an excellent idea!!!! I keep hoping that something interesting will come up in it...and NOPE...it does not!!! There has got to be a better book out there SOMEWHERE about beef than this one!!!

Have you read the book required for the Bee badge? That one I did not like either...

My daughter wants to watch the movie Les Miserables something fierce... Our "requirement" is you have to read the book first. She did and LOVED the book! Now I have to read it... I just cannot get through the first volume of it!!! She says after that one, the other two are great, but I keep finding other things to do, hahahaha.

Erin - I think you should make that suggestion to MaryJane and Brian ;)

I agree, Erin! You are our fearless leader and we are supporting you! haha
Is that The Secret Life of Bees or Montrose: Life in a Garden? I read the Secret Life quite a few years ago. I thought it was a little different. I feel like I need to re read it...or maybe just "peruse" to refresh my memory before I apply for that badge. I contacted the MJ library to see if I could borrow the Montrose book. I don't know if it's something I'd really want to keep forever.

It was The Secret Life of Bees. Did not like that book either!!!! Montrose: Life in a Garden was alright, but not my favorite. Maybe I am just picky ;)

I LOVED the horse book though!!!!

Hmm, maybe I'll do that. I'll think about it. It's one of my hang-ups for completing some of the badges.

Shannon, I try to make that a requirement in our house too. My husband usually reads to the kids at night. They just read the Hobbit. Now they're reading Lord of the Rings. I let them watch the trailers for the movies on Amazon Prime. I think they're still too young for the movies, well maybe my oldest could watch them, but that gets hairy because Kilian and Connor do everything together. They read a lot of Roald Dahl books last year and now they can finally watch the BFG after we pick it up from the library.

Debbie, I had to laugh when you said no facebook for lent. I'm doing the same thing, with the exception of checking my events since I have so many with my homeschool groups. I'm also giving up you tube for lent. That can be a huge time suck for me!

Erin, my 5 year old grandson asked me the other day if I had UTube on my ipad...he likes to check out reviews on Nerf guns! I didn't even know there was such a thing out there! haha
I told my husband that I was giving up Facebook this morning. I'm really not on it a lot...maybe check it once a day, scroll through until I've had enough. He says, Oh, you don't have to give it completely up! He's not admitting that he's the one who wants to keep tabs on what's going on out in the Internet world! If he can figure out my password, he can look for himself!

Haha that's hilarious. My husband is way more into facebook than I am. I did start to get a little obsessive though over the last month or two so I'm glad it's giving me a break. A little deconditioning to the endless scroll. When Jason's on facebook I'm always asking him "Did you get to the bottom yet?"

You Tube was more about news since we don't have cable. I'm glad to get a break from that too. My kids like it too mostly for minecraft videos. You have to be careful though because they can end up in some weird places if you aren't paying attention. My friend's daughter watches Frozen videos that people make for you tube, and they're harmless but she ended up watching something just through what was recommended next that wasn't really appropriate. I'm sure you don't let your grandson have free reign, but just so you know! :)

Erin, that is good to know!!! They make it too easy for people to accidentally end up somewhere that they had no intention of going. Really scary when it comes to little ones!
Jet loves Minecraft too!!!

It definitely takes me longer to finish a badge when I do not enjoy the book. In all honesty though, as a home schooling mom, I make my children finish books they do not enjoy all the time, for literature, so I really cannot complain too much! I have found that I do not always stick with a deadline I give myself, however, if I decide that I am not going to allow myself to read anything else until one of the books are done, I will stick with that!

So for March, I am going for the expert badge for Aprons, Beginner for Embroidery, and Intermediate for Quilting and Know Your Food. We'll see if I get any others done as well. I have three badges that I am reading books for, so I may be able to complete those as well.
