In an effort to get more "chatter" going on here, I thought I would introduce a couple new topics...

Does anyone have plans for their gardens yet? I know Alicia has HUGE plans. I need to sit down with my seeds and decide what I am going to try this first year old west!

I was so excited...as much as I LOVE snow...even I am getting tired of this long, cold, dreary winter! Two days ago I could see green grass! The snow was melting off of the fields! My husband is in a panic because he doesn't think that he will be able to be in the field in time to get his spring wheat planted. So I thought...here comes spring!!! I woke up yesterday morning to SNOW..and it snowed ALL DAY...we got close to another 7". I think we are close to 4 feet for our winter total. That has happened since about 1981. Wow...I sound like one of those old people now reminiscing about the old days...
I have dreams of gardening but I am NOT a gardener!!! I would really like to be, though! It's a good thing Brad is the farmer and not me. Years ago we planted a row of Indian corn up in the corner of one of his fields. He made a long row with his hoe. He planted corn for about 3 feet...and then I planted the next few feet...and then he planted the rest of the row. Do you know...when that corn came up...there was a GAP in the row, right where I had planted my corn kernals???? He got such a laugh out of that!
I love to look at seed catalogs and dream of warmer days and fresh vegetables. I was just thinking about starting some tomato plants in the house. I can a lot of tomatoes and would love to grow more heirloom tomato varieties. And then I think of my fellow neighbor/farmgirl who grows everything....her husband has built her 3 big greenhouses and her little business has really taken off. Maybe I would be better off just supporting her growing venture! I would love to hear what you girls are planning on growing! It will keep me inspired :)

I haven't sat down to decide. Today was beautiful at 69 degrees and they are calling 2-8" of snow tomorrow morning.
I'm ready for Spring. Been teasing us for a while but the only thing I can do here for the garden is start my seedlings.

I can't plant anything until the first full moon in June here (usually the third week) so I honestly don't really start planning yet. I have too many winter projects to finish, first :) But, I love to think in my mind about what we need more of, and where we are going to put everything. I'll put it down on paper in April or May, and then I can plant in June!

I don't plant here until after our last frost date. I don't like to have to keep covering everything.

Rumor has it you can plant out here after Mother's Day... yet they have been known to get snow on the 4th of July! It shall be interesting!!!

From what I have calculated, we will need around 40 tomato plants!!! 44 to be exact! That would allow me to can tomatoes, eat fresh, spaghetti sauce, pizza sauce, tomato sauce, tomato soup, and tomato paste.

Debating asparagus this year... I think I want to put them in the flower beds, as we are planting our garden in the front yard

Yum! I love asparagus. I was so sad...we planted asparagus from seed in BC and this would have been the first year we could eat it :(

I'm anxiously awaiting my aerogarden. Tracking says it shall be here tomorrow, but with all this snow, I'm not so sure. Going to grow lettuce, peppers, and tomatoes. That will get us by until it is time to plant outside. The way the weather is today, it looks like we'll be planting in August. It is snowing like crazy!

Welcome Christine to the Wildflower Henhouse :) So glad to have you join us!!!

We got another couple inches of snow the night before last and yesterday. And today it is suppose to be in the mid 40s!?!? Silly weather!!! For the next two weeks it will be like that, with exception of Saturday when we are suppose to be getting more snow!

I think I have decided to buy a couple indoor greenhouses to start my seeds this year, since our growing season is so much shorter. Anyone ever use these???

Christine - what is an aerograden???

Hi Shannon! Thank you. This looks like a great group. :)

It was 56* here yesterday. I love the warmer weather. Today...snow, snow... and more snow.

We bought a couple of those indoor greenhouses to start seeds this year. After looking out the window just now, it looks like we will be planting in August. lol The aerogarden is like an indoor set up where you can get plants all year long. It comes with those special lights that mimic the sunlight and the light moves with the height of the plants. (I'm trying to post a pic in this post, but can't. (I'll email you a pic). Hopefully it will grow. I love fresh veggies from the garden....

Hugs,
Christine

Shannon...that's not the greenhouse ones I got. (To start the seeds) I got the ones that give the "greenhouse effect" of the warmth...with the covers. I misunderstood you.

Honestly, I am not ready for Spring yet either, as I am LOVING the snow. But I also know with so many things being different, I have to plan and prepare.

I see my HUGEplans have been mentioned ;). Aside form those, truthfully, we haven't stopped gardening. Yesterday we weeded our garlic bed. We planted 6# last fall. Unknowingly, our straw had wheat berries still init, so most of the sprouts were wheat.

I am going to start some seeds tomorrow. They have been sitting on the counter for the last week and I have just been debating how I wanted to try. I am thinking of giving the winter sowing method a try and have saved milk jugs for it since November. We are Zone 6, BTW..

As for my HUGE plans, well, I sorta challenged myself to grow 60%+ of our family of 5's food for the year in approx 100 days. You can follow that story here.https://derbauernhofsite.wordpress.com/category/100-day-challenge/

About Asparagus, Shannon. Here it is a perennial. If it is there, as well, plant it! You won't really get anything until next year. Make sure it is in a good spot. Of course, I know you are observing, still. Maybe you could put a half dozen crowns to get started in your flower beds until you find an ideal location.
