I sat down this morning with my Baker Creek catalog and all my seeds that I have left... I shouldn't have to buy too many this year, as I want to start with what I have and see what grows. With our warmer temperatures right now, the snow is melting, so I'm looking to lay cardboard down on our front yard and cover it with mulch and compost. Hopefully this will start preparing our ground for planting. It blows my mind that there are not any worms!!!

Soooo I just studied my allergy testing I had done about a year ago... It was then that I learned that I am terribly allergic to cow milk, as well as pumpkin, green beans, and kidney beans. I finally sat down and did some researched. I had thought with being allergic to pumpkin, I should avoid winter squashes and that is it. Sadly no! they are all actually part of the same family, so no more squash, zucchini, or pumpkins for us :( Feeling kinda defeated, I looked up green beans and kidney beans, as I wondered if they were part of the same family... I tested fine for soybeans and lima beans. anyways, come to find out, green beans and kidney beans are indeed part of the same family. It beans I can eat other bean families though, including fava, lima, runner, soya, and long beans. But I have no clue how to cook or eat any of these! I've had lima beans before and didn't particularly care for the texture, but I'm willing to try again.

Runners aren't the same family? I would have thought they were. Love the lasagna method! It really gives soil a chance to build nutrients. I thought about putting some down at the farm, but I waited too long.

I started a bunch of coles today. I have some inside by a window, but most are outside, as I am trying the winter sowing method. I have chard, 2 kinds of kale, red cabbage and green, broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, some herbs, and lupine. Lupine is a perennial, but I wanted to get a jump start on it. It is nitrogen fixing, so I will plant it several places at the farm. Heading to the farm in the morning! Lots of work to do!

Alicia - green beans and the like are Phaseolus vulgaris, while runners are Phaseolus coccineus. I'm hoping they are different enough that I will not have issues! Are you familiar with runners? I'm not!!! But I'm willing to try! And maybe I am being an idiot (I seem to be that a lot here lately!!!), but what are coles? And what is the winter sowing method? Will I have time for the lasagna method if I do it now, and plant in May???

Hi Christine!!
NY did get hammered north of Albany in my hometown. I don't know if I could handle snow like that anymore but I sure do miss living back home. My dad and uncle had the best gardens. Alas that green thumb did not get passed to me.

Hi Denise! Schools were closed today, also. They called a 2 hr delay last night and then closed at 0800.
You miss living here and my husband and I long to move someplace far away! lol Gardens can be nice here, though. We had 7 foot tomato plants a few years ago. My husband has the greenest thumb ever! That guy can grow veggies on a rock if he wanted to. lol

Haha Shannon! That would be Jesse teaching you how. Me....not so much. lol That man can grow anything and bring plants back from death!! I'd love to head that way. Unfortunately, his job is here....We were just saying tonight how we need to live on a hundred acres of nothing.

oh--my aeroplanter came today! We are going to get it set up tomorrow. I'll send you pics of its progress. Hopefully, I'll have my tomatoes, lettuce and peppers soon. :)

:) Coles- Cabbage, Broccoli, Cauliflower, etc... https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/vegetables/vgen/cole-crop-plants.htm

Winter Sow-http://www.wintersown.org

Did you get my text about lasagna gardening? It is worth a try, but when you do plant, you need to get UNDER the mulch and cardboard and into the soil.

My greenhouses are set up indoors... I won't plant in them though until the end of the month. Today I am going to plan out my garden on graph paper, so I know how many of what I will be planting and where. Super excited to sit down and dream!

Hubby and I did some research and it looks like I shouldn't plant outside until mid-May... so I guess I will wait to plant my seeds indoors until the middle of this month!

Rumor has it we can get snow on the 4th of July! I think eventually we need a high tunnel!!!

Yeah snow on the fourth of July seems very wrong. I bet you're really excited to start your garden in your new home, Shannon!

Snow in July definitely seems wrong, but I'm loving the snow right now! We got another inch or so last night :) And yes, Erin, I am super excited to plant a garden here!
