I wanted to share with you a project I did this week dying some blown out eggs using natural ingredients. The yellow dye was made with curry powder, the blue was made with crushed blueberries and the brown/pinkish purple were both made from fresh beets. All you do is add your natural ingredients to water, simmer for 30 minutes to concentrate the colors, cool enough to handle and add 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar to each cup of fluid. Place eggs in dye bath and allow to set for 30 minutes or more. Although they are not as bright in color as food coloring, I love that they are all natural. The muted colors are pretty to me too. The handmade carrots came from Ebay and the little chicken and cotton batting rabbit were from my Easter basket as a child.
Have any of you tried to use natural ingredients to dye Easter eggs? If so, what did you use and how did they turn out? I would love to hear what worked for you! |

I love your idea, Winnie. Love those carrots, too. I have some orange fabrics - I may need to try that. |

Pretty eggs and carrots too :)! I have blown out a few of my chickie girl eggs, it wasn't easy for me to do :(! But I love the natural dye idea. The last time I cooked beets, I so wished I had something to dye, the water was so pretty, hated to throw it away. |

I have used beet juice to dye them. But never tried anything else. I don't get white eggs from my girls only brown. Although some are very light in color so I may be able to try it with them. I love your little display Winnie. The muted colors are pretty too! |

If you do try this idea, please share some photos so we can see how your efforts worked. I do think it is variable depending on the concentration of the dye bath, the actual egg shell and length of time. I wanted to try and see how everyday foods could actually make pretty dyes for Easter. NO doubt there are many other things that will work as well.
Bonnie, I have an egg that we dyed using onion skins and I will post a photo of it later today. When we were kids, my Mom always saved the onion skins so we could dye 2-3 eggs in them and enjoy. The results are very interesting! |

Winnie, thank you for sharing your idea of using natural dyes for Easter eggs. Your display turned out lovely. Although they do look pretty I have not dabbled in egg coloring. It is not part of my heritage, however it is a tradition on my DH's side of the family. Every Easter Pumpkin and her cousins will dye eggs! They do make for a colourful basket! |

Here is a photo of a goose egg that I dyed a few years ago with the onion skins of Spanish onions.
What you do is wrap the skins tightly around your egg. Then secure the egg in an old nylon stocking and tie both ends so that the stocking holds the skins in place on the egg. If you are using a raw egg, place it in water and boil like any other hard boiled egg but all allow the egg to remain in the hot water bath another 30 minutes or more. Carefully unwrap the egg and onion skins if they are still hot. If you use a blown out egg, then you just wrap the same way, place it in boiling water and turn off heat and allow to steep for 30-45 minutes. What is really cool about this process is that no two eggs end up looking the same. It is so interesting to see how each egg had different patterns of brown/yellow/beige. Try it out and see what you think! |

Here are my naturally dyed eggs. I cannot take credit for them though, God and the hens were in charge.I love the speckled eggs, and the lights washed out the color of the green egg. It is on the right, front, between two shades of brown. Notice the little eggs from the banty hens. There is only one white egg in these photos, on the far left. |

I wonder if you could use purple onion skins to dye them? |

What a pretty goose egg that you dyed, Winnie, I love the pattern and the color of it. Denise is the purple onion different than the red one? It probably would be pretty. What fun ways to dye the eggs.

I have never blown out eggs. Is it hard to do Winnie? Might have to check it out on youtube. We have some very light colored eggs. Usually brown but sometimes we will get one that is almost white. Darlene, I don't know if the red onions are the same ones I call purple but these are really a dark purple so I'm not sure. |

Denise, blowing out eggs is very easy. Just take a long thick needle with a sharp end, gently pick open one end and make a small hole like the size you see in my photo, turn the egg over and do the same thing to the other end. When you have both ends with a hole., take the needle and gently pop it up and down in the egg to break up the yoke, then place your mouth over one of the ends and blow the contents out into a bowl. If you make you hole large enough, it is very easy to do. If you make a small hole it is totally too hard! Good luck and let us know how it goes. Your eggs sound like they would work just fine. It will be interesting to see how they do.
Darlene, I have never tried the skins from the red/purple onions. I bet they would do really well and I just need to try that out sometime. The brown skins come from the everyday basic onions you find in the store which I think are called Spanish Onions. |
