Shall we start to pick out our next book? Here are few suggestions, but I'd love to hear what everyone else would like read!

1. "Dinner with the Smileys" by Sarah Smiley

"This book began for a simple reason: my husband left for a 13-month deployment, and my three sons were sad to see his empty seat at the family dinner table. So I decided to fill it. For each week that Dustin was deployed (and there were 52 of them!), the boys and I invited someone new to sit in his seat and share a meal with us — at the dinner table. We welcomed artists, governors, senators, school teachers, musicians, comedians, neighbors, and even a zookeeper. Despite its beginnings, however, Dinner with the Smileys isn’t really about dinner. And it’s not about the military. It’s about the family dinner table and inviting your community to join you there. What I learned after hosting 52 dinners in a year is that there are many lonely people in our communities. And no one should have to eat alone. My husband is home now, but our dinners continue. I’ll share them with you here, along with recipes and pictures. My hope is that you, too, will be encouraged to invite someone to dinner."

2. "Stalking the Wild Asparagus" by Euel Gibbons

Editorial Reviews
From Scientific American
STALKING THE WILD ASPARAGUS was a bible of the environmental movement--as well as a primer for anyone interested in healthy, inexpensive eating.

"“delightful and as valid today as they were more than two decades ago.”
Nelson Bryant,The New York Times (1989) "

"“He (Euell Gibbons) was a man who knew the wild in a way that no one else in this time has even marginally approached.”
John McPhee,The New York Times (1976) "

From the Publisher
Euell Gibbons was one of the few people in this country to devote a considerable part of his life to the adventure of "living off the land." His greatest pleasure was seeking out wild plants, which he made into delicious dishes. The plants he gathers and prepares in this book are widely available everywhere in North America. There are recipes for delicious vegetable and casserole dishes, breads, cakes, and twenty different pies. He also shows how to make numerous jellies, jams, teas, and wines, and how to sweeten them with wild honey or homemade maple syrup.

3. "Wedded to the Land: Stories From a Simple Life on an Organic Fruit Farm" by Joan Donaldson

“Whether she’s writing about the staccato of a hairy woodpecker echoing through the woods, tapping sweet sap from a cluster of maples during a spring sugaring ritual or mourning the loss of her ox, Tolstoy, Joan Donaldson’s sensuous prose shimmers and surprises. Her collection of essays, Wedded to the Land, peels back the skin of her blueberry farm with the precision and eloquence of a Wendell Berry, Edward Abbey, and other agrarian essayists who make us pine for the lost heart of the country."
From the author: "John thought he was building a garage when he erected a timber-frame building only a stone’s throw from the house we built on the back of our farm. While washing the dishes, I mulled over how pleasant it would be to look out our kitchen window and watch goats lounge in a paddock. If goats lived in the new shed, the walk wouldn’t be far when milking in the winter or during kidding season. Once outside, I scanned the sixteen-by-twenty-foot framework. “You know, a couple of goats would fit nicely in here. There’s room for two stalls.” John’s hammer paused. I continued. “The aspens and honeysuckle on the north would shelter an outdoor pen.” I tied on a nail apron and picked up a hammer."

Happy Day!

Amy,

Thank you for offering these choices. They all sound great! If I had to pick a favourite I'd go with: Stalking the Wild Asparagus" by Euel Gibbons.

Hi Farmgirls,
I'm new here, and I am thrilled to see such great choices. I vote for Dinner with the Smileys. I love the idea of a book about drawing people together and creating relationships. But all the books look great and I am looking forward to the next selection.

I am in the process of reading two books that are borrowed so I may not be able to do this one too. I'll have to see how quickly I can get through those.
Today looks like a good day to read!

All 3 sound good! The last 2 probably are more educational for our farming adventure, though. We have a LOT to learn about orchards! lol!!

Has anyone else been reading this book? I'm almost finished, and thought we could start discussing it maybe this weekend. I'm very curious to see what others think!
