Just a refresher on the book description. It should be available in most libraries. There are lots of used copies available on Amazon, but I didn't see a Kindle version. Can't wait to read this! Our discussion will be around the last week in February. Happy reading!

2. "Stalking the Wild Asparagus" by Euel Gibbons

Editorial Reviews
From Scientific American
STALKING THE WILD ASPARAGUS was a bible of the environmental movement--as well as a primer for anyone interested in healthy, inexpensive eating.

"“delightful and as valid today as they were more than two decades ago.”
Nelson Bryant,The New York Times (1989) "

"“He (Euell Gibbons) was a man who knew the wild in a way that no one else in this time has even marginally approached.”
John McPhee,The New York Times (1976) "

From the Publisher
Euell Gibbons was one of the few people in this country to devote a considerable part of his life to the adventure of "living off the land." His greatest pleasure was seeking out wild plants, which he made into delicious dishes. The plants he gathers and prepares in this book are widely available everywhere in North America. There are recipes for delicious vegetable and casserole dishes, breads, cakes, and twenty different pies. He also shows how to make numerous jellies, jams, teas, and wines, and how to sweeten them with wild honey or homemade maple syrup.

Happy Day!

That sounds good! I used to enjoy watching his shows when I was young.

I finished this last night. Did anyone else read it? I'd say it was more of almost a field guide with recipes. It contains a tremendous quantity of information, but for me it was a difficult read, almost like reading a text book. It didn't have much entertainment value, but then that's not what it was meant for. He did succeed in increasing my interest in wild food foraging, that's for sure. I was also struck with how ahead of his time he was. When he wrote this book, wild foods were of little to no interest to the general public. I remember he was ridiculed a lot in the media for his "radical" views. It's interesting and gratifying to see how far we've come as a society.

Please share your thoughts if you did read this book. I don't think a list of discussion questions is appropriate for this one. But I'd really like us to share our impressions before we move on to another book!

Well, I'm gonna guess that either (1) nobody read this or (2) those who did either gave up on it or didn't ike it! It was a challenging read I must admit, a little bit like reading papers or books for school. But I'm glad I read it, and if anyone has an interest in wild food foraging, give it a read, it's full of valuable information!
