I managed to get this little quilt finished! The pattern is called Black Cat on Moon. I used all scraps! It feels great not having to cut into yardage for a small piece.

Now if I can get in gear to finish some larger projects from my UFO pile! Cheers!

My friend Debbie just posted the cutest little pillow she made from a free pattern from Kathy Schmitz. Debbie is so creative, you can check out the blog entry here: http://woolnsails.blogspot.com/2016/02/monday-finish.html

The hand embroidery free pattern (as well as others) from Kathy Schmitz can be had here: http://www.kathyschmitz.com/free-patterns.htm

Have fun!

Winnie, Just wondering about your socks. What size needle do you use for those? I really want to learn to knit socks and I figure I had better just jump in or I will never try it.

Deinse, the size needle really depends on the yarn thickness. Most sock yarn is very thin and requires a #1 or #2. Because I find it so hard to use those smaller needles, I use a #3 and still get a good result and less soreness in my fingers. If you are using sport yarn or worsted yarn , you need a size #6 and will get a much thicker sock that works for boots or heavy shoes. My sock class started us with sport yarn so we could use the #6 needle to learn with. My suggestion is to try a #6 for the first pair too so that you don't have to worry about such small stitches. Usually, the yarn will suggest what size needle to use to get a specific gauge. If there are no suggestions, you pattern will tell you what size gauge to use for the pattern and you can then try out and see what size to use. So much depends on how tight your natural tension is as well. I tend to knit tightly and often need a larger needle to get the correct pattern gauge. I hope this makes sense!

Oh, I forgot to post that I made some marmalade this past weekend from the oranges and Kumquats in our yard. It turned out delicious too!! I always use MaryJanes ChillOver powder in place of pectin because I can use less sugar and cook the batch longer to concentrate the fruit flavor.

I love the thicker hand-knitted (not BY me) socks better. I love the squishy feeling they give my feet. I am determined to knit a pair myself one of these days.

What do kumquats taste like, Winnie? Sounds interesting. Does MJs Chill-over powder have the directions for use in jelly or jam? I have some chill-over powder to try, but haven't done it yet.

Kumquats are delicious! We used to pick them at my uncle's house when we visited in the 70's. We stayed with him for a while. I went to school while we were there. They lived in Brandon at the time. Do you know that area Winnie? Thanks for information on the socks. I will be sure to start with the #6 needles and sport yarn.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments regarding my little quilt!

Winnie, looks delish! I haven't canned in ages. I used to can when I lived in Montreal, yea the city! Now that I live in the country, I haven't canned! lol

Linda, kumquats are a citrus that is unique in taste. Some of my fruits were actually sweet like oranges. Most of the time, they are sour but make great jam which has sugar added. When I purchased my ChillOver powder, it has a little booklet inside that includes recipes for fruit jams to follow.. Give it a try and see what you think. I love using it.

Denise, did you mean Bradenton, Florida? I do know where that is located but I am not familiar with Brandon. Kumquats grow everywhere down here and are fun to eat, can and use sliced in salads too.

Winnie do you cook your fruits on the stove top or a crock pot to concentrate the flavor? I cook yellow summer squash in the crock pot and it is so good I call it candy squash, but it has no sugar added.

Winnie,
Brandon is near Plant City area. I could not remember what they were called until you mentioned them. I would think about them occasionally and but there was no one around anymore to ask. I am so glad you posted a picture. Wish we could get some here!

Winnie, as a former Florida girl I love kumquats! Never heard of making jelly with them. Sounds quite awesome. Is there a recipe you use? Maryellen
