Along with other members I am interested in growing & using herbs. I have a couple of proposals. Would like to hear your ideas and how to go about it.

Proposal #1 Work on Badges - Found in Section Garden Gate #11 Herbs

Proposal #2 Herb Book, Magazine, or Article Review. There is a lot of good material about herbs. A member would post what she wants to review, and either to it as she goes along, or do one review when she finishes.

Reviews may be given when and as often as someone wants to do them.

Love love love using herbs! I grow numerous culinary herbs and haveahuge collection of dried medicinal herbs! I am up for both proposals... Do you want us to write reviews on this thread? I actually received a book not that long ago, that I need to read...

I'm so happy you all like the idea. I will start a thread under Book Discussions for the reviews and one under badges.

I wasn't able to do the Herb Badge under badges so I edited this header to include discussion on Merit Badges.

To help get us started here's the info on the badge.

Garden Gate

11. Herbs

Beginner Level

Identify five herbs and their possible uses and try at least one.

Intermediate Level

Start an herb garden. Grow two herbs for cooking or medicinal uses, harvest them, and use them.

Expert Level

Grow an additional three herbs.

Harvest and use the new herbs.

From herbs you have grown, package up either fresh or dried herbs in small gift packets, and include a recipe to share with at least five of your family, friends, and/or neighbors.

Yikes! I need to put in for these soon, as I can do all three levels, just with what I have in the garden this year, but will be leaving it all behind when we move! I will post what I turn in on here... Will that work?

Shannon that's a good idea. I hadn't thought that far along. Two minds always better than one.

Shannon's idea: To post here what we summit for Herb Merit Badges.

We can also post any questions or suggestions about the badges as we work on them. If you just want to talk about what you are doing tell us here. Just like if we were at monthly gatherings facing each other across the kitchen table.

Also celebrate getting our badges here. In this case it's okay to toot our own horns.

Well shoot! I turned in my application for my beginner badge in herbs and forgot to copy it! I'm working on the intermediate now, so I'll try to remember. But the five herbs I talked about are my "medicinal go-to's."

1. Arnica
2. Comfrey
3. Yarrow
4. Plantain
5. Chickweed

My intermediate badge application:
Herbal gardening has been an adventure for me... one that I have found I greatly enjoy! For this badge, I started growing two types of culinary herbs - basil and mint.

1. Basil - Oh how I love basil! It seems to be an incredibly easy herb to grow - one that I now have both in my herb garden outside, as well as inside! I have now made pesto with it, that I have used fresh as well as frozen in ice cube trays. I have also harvested leaves to use fresh in Caprese Salad, as well as to flavor various dishes, especially Italian meals! I have recently tried growing some Thai Basil as well, which is quite different that the sweet and genovese basils I first started growing!

2. Mint - One of my favorite times to drink mint tea, or have one of my kids drink mint tea, is when one of them is fighting a fever. We try to stay away from over the counter medications, but there are times a fever just gets a little too high for comfort. At those times, I love to give a warm cup of mint tea. I personally also use it for morning sickness, as well as for flavoring in my mineral tea, which also has alfalfa and oat straw, to keep my calcium and magnesium up while pregnant, thus keeping away leg cramps and muscle spasms. Right now I have both regular mint as well as chocolate mint growing. The chocolate mint is quite lovely with a TINY piece of stevia leaf as an evening "snack". :)

Wooo-ray for Shannon! Saw whoo-ray on a card and have been waiting for a chance to drop the "h" and make it wooo-ray.

Shannon I grew comfrey years ago when I was into making healing salves. You have sparked my interest in it again. Will have to look into a supplier for the fall. I do remember that it was the only herb I harvested in the evening instead of morning. It's oil is more consecrated later in the day.

Wow, I am in awe of you girls! When it comes to herbs, is it possible to be "less" than a newbie?

I did plant sage and thyme in the garden this year, and I also bought 4 nice rosemary plants which are in the garden now, but will be coming indoors in the fall.

I did have a small herb garden about 30 years ago, but not since then. At that time the house I bought had the garden already started and was overgrown and out of control. Applemint was growing everywhere and I didn't have a clue what to do with it....still don't.

I doubt that I will work for a badge, but I am very interested in reading what you all do and maybe learning something in the process.

This week I am working on all 3 levels of merit badges. Today I am drying rosemary, Greek oregano, and sage to make medicinal & cooking tea bags for Expert Level. During the week I will be drying more herbs for the bags. Hopefully I will complete it by next week.

For Level 1 & 2 all I have to do is collect my thoughts and write it to submit.

Erin & Shannon how fun to be working on Level 3 together.

Today I dried chives, Greek Oregano, rosemary, and sage.

Tomorrow I hope to dry thyme, lemon grass, and Mojito mint(Cuban).

Wednesday is grocery shopping day so I won't be drying.

Thursday & Friday it'll be spearmint, peppermint, and chocolate mint.

By the middle of next week I hope to make up the recipes and put them in tea bags.

Just submitted for the expert badge - here is what i wrote -
Along with my basil and mint, I have cilantro, chives, parsley, thyme, lavender, rosemary, sage, and oregano growing in the herb portion of my garden. They are so lovely, both fresh and dried. My recipe I shared is for Herbal Vinegar. In a half pint jar, tightly pack a mixture of equal amounts of garlic, onions, oregano, thyme, and basil. Cover the mixture with apple cider vinegar (preferably with the mother). Cover with a piece of waxed paper and then a metal lid. Let stand for 3-4 weeks, and then strain. We enjoy using this vinegar, added to olive oil, as a salad dressing.

Just a note to share w/ y'all..............................several of us have immune disorders......mine is Systemic Lupus...........some have MS, etc........................ alphalfa is a BIG NO-NO for people w/ Lupus !!!!! Check w/ your doctor w/ other immune issues !
Many people make a huge mistake w/ herbal/naturals assuming they're all safe 'cuz they're "natural".................they have medicinal properties too and can interfere w/ other meds too..........just be careful.................my Dr. said those of us w/ immune issues typically need be most weary of herbs FOR THE IMMUNE SYSTEM like echinacia, alphalfa, etc. as it tends to tell OUR bodies there's something going on :-) I'm NOT A DOCTOR...........just had to learn the verrrry hard way on the alphalfa.......threw my Lupus in an awlful tizzy !!!! I'm most certainly NOT trying to scare anyone off on the wonderful herbs...........just be aware "Natural/herbal DON'T mean can't have issues :-)
TONS of HUGS !

That is a really good point Jami! Just like foods can affect people differently, herbs are the same way! I knew alfalfa was a no no for lupus. I use it though I have fibromyalgia, and haven't had any issues that I know of ;) But then again, I don't use a ton of it, so the effects may not be screamingly obvious either. The one thing i have found with herbs, is to research them... in various places! Find people or websites you trust that are quite open about various possibilities, and truly look into it! I have to be very careful with what I use because I seem to always be either nursing or pregnant, lol.... literally for the last 12+ years I have been one or the other, if not both!
