With being MIA recently, I am wondering if we have any badge all of us are working towards?

We don't currently. The last one sort of fizzled I think, but it was right before Christmas. Do you have any suggestions?

Ok here's my idea for our next badge to work on....

Because it's March, and March is all about GREEN things, I propose that we pick one of the first 3 badges from Cleaning Up to work on. I'm keeping it broad because I know some of us have some of them done already. If you have the beginner part done, just move on to the next level. In case you don't have them printed out, the first three badges are...

Going Green
Shopping Green
Green Energy

I'll start a new thread for anyone who wants to join in.

I have got to sit down and print my badge stuff out. I think all I need is about 15 minutes. Can't seem to get that many together. I did the beginner badge for the Green. Need to work on the intermediate.

Finally starting getting things printed off and organized for my badges. Using a binder for the certificates and printed off the check list and badges so I can start getting those stitched up. Sometimes I feel like everything piles up and I get so far behind on it all. I like to be organized but rarely do I accomplish it.

Denise, I know what you mean. I have a couple different ideas for binders that I want to put together, but haven't done it yet. I printed out all of the badges, and a new checklist (mine was outdated) and right after that my print head clogged and I had to order a print head cleaning kit! That put me behind on things for a few days. The boys were happy they didn't have any math worksheets to do for a couple days!

Lol, Erin there is a bright to everything I guess. I have a small binder for the certificates and I printed off my badges and tucked them in the pocket for working on when I can. The checklist is in there too and I haven't filled it in yet at all. I have to work on that today sometime.

Working on the "Green Badges". I had already done the beginner & intermediate levels for going green, in the past. So working on shopping green. Have collected 3 reusable bags...now just have to remember to take them with me when I go shopping. LOL that is the hard part!!!!
Working on sewing 3 more. Need to keep them on the bench near my purse, I guess.

Also working on "bread making". My past attempts, turned out like building bricks. Running joke with my boys, was that we were baking them to build raised bed for the garden. "Thanks guys for the support". <3. Have since given up on the bread machine and having better luck, the old fashion way. Still a work in progress, but no longer buy store bought. Yeah ! Anyone with a tried and true favorite recipe they want to share....would love to try some new ones.

OK, Joan...here it is!
White Bread 101

3 c. flour
2 tsp. instant yeast
1 1/4 tsp. salt
3 tbsp. sugar
1/3 c. potato flakes
1 1/8 c. warm water
4 tbsp. butter
1/4 c. nonfat dry milk
Combine all ingredients in large mixer bowl. Mix well and either knead by hand about 10 minutes or with dough hook on mixer until you have a soft, smooth dough. Adjust the dough's consistency with additional flour and water as needed.
Cover and let rise for 1 hour until puffy, though not necessarily doubled in bulk. Punch down and shape into a loaf. Let rise until loaf is about 1" above the rim of the loaf pan, about 1 hour. If it takes a little longer, it's fine.
Bake at 350 for 35-40 minutes. Remove to wire rack. Cool 15 minutes. Brush with butter.

I use my bread machine. I usually make French bread because that's what Jason likes, but I like to make rye too. I'll make beer bread if my dad's been over and leaves a cheap beer in our fridge. If we have beer it's usually some kind of boujie expensive kind that I feel guilty pouring into a bread machine.

Debbie I'd love to try that recipe, but I never have potato flakes. Is that like boxed potatoes?

I always make whole wheat. So not GF but we have gotten so used to it that I notice whenever dh or son go out to eat they will order whole wheat. LOL! It's not the same as grinding your own and making it but at least they have changed their habits a little bit.

Thanks Debbie
I am baking bread tomorrow while my DH is at work, so will give it a try and let you know how I do! Would also love to try a GF recipe or other types of flour. Love Spelt bread, but haven't found a good recipe. When I go to our local market and see all the different flour types would like to, but haven't experimented so far. Does anyone have a favorite flour blend they use for bread?

Joan, I would love to hear how the bread turns out and if your family likes it. I'm baking a whole wheat bread today. I got the recipe from a childhood friend. Her mom had a grain mill and ground her own wheat berries and make it with her Kitchenaid. You can knead it by hand, if you'd rather. Somethings I do if I'm working out some aggression :). It can be a little dense but I've been experimenting with it. I added a dough enhancer today to see if it lightens it a bit. I LOVE to shop online at King Arthur Flour! They have so many wonderful things to look at...a baking Disneyland!

Debbie, King Arthur flour is my favorite. I usually get the 50 lb bag of bread flour from Costco because I bake about a loaf a day, but King Arthur bread flour always makes the bread turn out just a little better.

I'll have to check next time I'm at Costco and see if they carry KAF in this store....that would save the cost of shipping.

Thanks for the tip about King Aurthur Flour website, OMG what a treasure trove. My new favorite place to browse. Looks like some great tips for the newbie bread baker ME. You're right about bakers "Fun Land"! Will let you know how bread turns out. Thanks again.

I have a Whisper Mill for grinding and a Bosch mixer I use for kneading my whole wheat bread. I use lecithin granules for a dough enhancer. Makes it lighter. I have only done kneading by hand for white bread. I love King Arthur flours. They carry them in our local grocery store.
