I think it worked out well to have sort of a theme for the month for badges. I'll think about one for April, but as always, I'm open to suggestions if someone else has an idea! :) |

I saw that Joyce! You're so on it. I haven't applied for mine yet. I still have to mail it out! Although I do have it ready to go, so that's better than nothing! |

I liked having set badges to work on in March because this pushed me to a badge I would probably have ignored but turned out to be interesting. I was surprised by how much the search for energy has impacted our region, but maybe that is everywhere? The county seat claims to have had first railroad and that was to get coal to NYC. You can still see the canals that were used to transport the coal before this and a restored canal house recently opened. Coal certainly can cause problems-coal fires have been burning underground about 30 miles away for decades. The area is also impacted by Lake wallenpaupack, a nearly 6,000 acre lake built in the 1920s for hydroelectricity. This changed the area forever with the second home/tourism that drives the local economy. Nearby we also have the second largest windfarm in the East with 43 turbines. The next county over has been in the middle of the fracking for oil controversy. Solar is only capable of providing 12% of PA's energy needs. Nuclear power scares me. Green energy is good but I don't see the end of oil and gas being used any time soon. |

I can see turbines from my front porch that are in Ohio. The energy they produce though goes somewhere out east, maybe New York. There's a lot of controversy about the windfarms around here. There are plans to put one a few towns over from us, but again, the energy produced doesn't stay local. That seems wrong to me. |
