So I'm in my garden picking my beans. Pick, pick, pick, go grab another branch and a Praying Mantis comes jumping out and scared the you know what out of me lol. Holy cows, it was huge, the grand daddy of them all. Where that thing was hiding I don't know. But now I can't find it lol.

One Summer when I lived in Spokane and was in my early 20's we had Praying Mantis every
where. It was like a biblical plague...you opened your doors and there would be 20 or more
hanging on your screen door. The Crescent Building that I worked in down town...would have
them dead by the hundreds all over the floors in the bathrooms...they were coming in thru
the ventilation system. It was creepy...and disgusting. I like them one at a time...but
not every where you turn...and the dead ones crunching under your feet. It was Gross!

So Joan...I hope that makes you feel better about your one Mantis...it could have been worse,
like an Alfred Hitchcock Movie or The 10 Commandments! LOL

Hugs,
Peggy

I had a praying mantis recently but had to let him go, but that would be creepy to have that many around.

The one I had wasn't that big it was one of the ones they let go at the school and it found it's way into the school so I took it home but didn't have any aphids to feed it but it had the prettiest little face and a lot of charachter in it's little eyes. I loved that little guy. I let it go out side my house and hope my kitties didn't bother it.

It was a neat experience.

When I was growing up on our farm we had them in the barn all the time. I haven't seen them for a long time.

We had another one caught in the school again yesterday. It sure looked different than the one I had, It was a little bit bigger and more tan colored and it's face was different than the green one I had, do they change that much or is there that much a difference between the males and female.

Earlier in the summer I saw mantids hatch from an egg case for the first time...kind of creepy but totally amazing also. Today I had one the size of the state of Montana jump on my arm, so I jump and scream and drop my picking basket so now I have tomatoes rolling everywhere. I finally got my heart rate down out of the sky, picked everything, took a deep breath, and saw another GIANT one. Wow! They eat grasshoppers, so fine by me, just don't touch me!!!
However, Peggy, that is beyond weird and gross and yucky! I thought the praying mantis only stuck around where there was food, I don't know why there would be so many.

I don't like them hitching a ride on my shoulder or my wheelbarrow, which they often do. Usually one of the cats takes off after them.

I probably wouldn't like them jumping on me either.
