John F. Kennedy

Thanks, Marly, for starting this thread sharing quotes. It is like joyful homework finding new ones to share. I know others stop in to read here, and I would like to encourage them to share, too.

Gratitude does change the way we look at things.

"When you rise in the morning, give thanks for the light, for your life, for your strength. Give thanks for your food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason to give thanks, the fault lies in yourself."

When I read your last quote, I looked up the poet Howard Nemerov because the name wasn't familiar to me and enjoyed some of his quotes. I especially liked this one.

Maybe that is why we think of wisdom from older people who have had time to not only accumulate knowledge, but also to have the experience to develop judgement.

Time is such an interesting topic! So many people are always in a rush and yet don't make good use of the time they have.

Susan, you are so right. I taught music and those "little people" sure made me laugh. Some comments from them made by heart hurt. One Christmas I asked each student what one thing they wanted the most for Christmas. One student said he wanted an alarm clock. Why an alarm clock, I asked. He wanted it to be able to wake up early to get to school for breakfast. This sweet child was in the third grade. Needless to say, he DID get the alarm clock. I've never seen such a big smile.

I was going through chemo and had lost my hair. When students asked why I was wearing hats I just explained, without too much detail, that I had to take some strong medicine that caused me to lose my hair and that it would grow back. One beautiful little Somali girl who always wore the fabric head-covering, looked at me very seriously and asked "What if it doesn't?" Until that moment I had never thought of that possibility! But my wild mane is well past my shoulders again.
