What do you make with buttermilk? I was craving my mother-in-laws buttermilk syrup, so I finally decided to give it a try. The only buttermilk option I had at the store was a half gallon and only used one cup for the recipe. I am also going to attempt to make buttermilk biscuits tonight for dinner. Since I have never used buttermilk before today I am looking for ways to use up the rest of this half gallon. I do not like the taste, so I won't drink it. What other ways can I use this buttermilk before it goes bad?

I mostly have buttermilk powder so I can have it anytime. I use it in baking just about any thing that uses milk: biscuits, cornbread, cakes, dumplings, etc. Just decrease the baking powder by ½ teaspoon and add ½ teaspoon baking soda.

I have never heard of buttermilk syrup. What do you do with it?

When frying chicken you can dip the chicken in buttermilk before putting it in flour. Some people marinate the chicken in buttermilk up to 30 minutes. Tenderizes the chicken and adds flavor.

Judith, I was considering getting powder in the future so I don't have to worry about using it all before it goes bad. We use buttermilk syrup on pancakes and waffles. It is so yummy!

Thanks Sara. I may give this one a try. We are not big into frying chicken, but it's worth trying.

Some cake and cookie recipes call for buttermilk as do some types of breads. I made a pound cake this afternoon with buttermilk. I didn't buy the buttermilk, I just added a tablespoon of white vinegar to a cup of milk, whisked them together, then let it sit for 10 minutes. It works just fine. I've also used buttermilk for fried chicken and pancakes. Have fun finding recipes to use up the recipe of your buttermilk.

When I read your title before I clicked here my answer was "nothing!" LOL! Usually when I come across a recipe for buttermilk I just use my raw milk - for the same reason as you, I would never use it all if I bought some. And since I rarely use it there's no reason to culture my own. I had a thought though and checked - maybe try these: https://bakingitbeautiful.com/grandmas-buttermilk-cookies/

Thanks for the ideas Dawn.

Karen, sounds like I just need to get some powder!

Heather, thanks for the link. I will check it out.

On Wednesday I decided to make Auntie MaryJane's cast iron buttermilk biscuits! They were delicious! They didn't look the prettiest because my cookie cutter wasn't deep enough lol but they still tasted amazing! I will be making another batch again tomorrow.

Krista they look delicious! I think your buttermilk will be gone in no time. It does keep a long time.

Judith, I made my second batch last night. They don't seem to last very long in my house lol. I guess I will have to start making a double batch. I also don't have very much buttermilk left over either, so I agree with you.
