There's something peaceful about being in a garden after the thunder and rain have passed. This morning the thunderstorm didn't let up until after lunch. The sun came out and I waited a couple of hours for the grass to dry a bit before I ventured out to see how my plants faired during the heavy rain & wind. Happy to tell you there wasn't a broken stem or a blossom lost. My 5 tomato plants are thriving, and each has several blossoms though the plants are just a little over a foot tall. The zinnias are beginning to bloom and the yarrow finally has started to grow. Herbs on the back deck are healthy and the yellow pansies are hanging on. Don't know how the pansies will do in the summer heat but for now they are beautiful.

Connie your plants are beautiful. The plants in the raised beds are all lagging behind where they should be because of all the dark days we have had this spring. The herbs and pansies on the deck are where they should be because of the dusk to dawn light

Sara, I am so happy when my plants survive storms. We get some pretty wicked wind here, so my plants learn from the start they need to be tough and hold on lol! I hope your plants continue to grow beautifully.

Something has been eating on my spearmint plant and this morning I discovered it was a green caterpillar. Couldn't find it in my butterfly book so I cut the stem/leaves it was munching on and moved it far away from my herbs. Just guessing I think it is a moth caterpillar because there are many moths around the dusk to dawn light on the deck. I harvested a wee handful of spearmint from the leggy stems and have it drying on the kitchen table under the ceiling fan, not enough spearmint to mess with my dehydrator.
Yesterday my neighbor told me he saw two cardinals on my tomato plants. I guess they like tomatoes too. How do I keep birds from eating my tomatoes?

Seems like any of the Mints, insects wouldn't eat because of the scent. wonder if it's in the Horn worm family. They eat anything green! Then hatch into a Luna Moth.
My brother tied tin pie plates on his tomatoes stakes to scare the birds away. Martha Stewart always says, its a fight between nature and the garden every year.

Thanks Connie, I didn't see a horn on the caterpillar but I do think it turns into some kind of moth. My raised bed strikes me at just below my waist so I hope tomato horned worms can't get to them, will have to watch out for them.

Connie, I get dizzy when I bend over so the only way I can keep gardening is to have raised beds that high. The galvanized tubs sit on 2 high cement blocks. On the deck my herbs sit on plant stands so I don't have to bend over.

Same with me too, most of my flowers are in pots that I can sit on my patio table. Flower in my raised bed come back, or I sit pots of flowers in it too.
I would like to try to do one like yours!!

Sara -- you are right. It probably turns into one of those white butterflies. Last year those worms almost decimated my Egyptian mint. I thought it odd that something would eat it; bugs usually leave it alone. I've had this mint for 40 years and this is the first time anything has bothered it.

Judith I am interested in hearing more about your Egyptian mint, haven't heard of it before.
Connie, between dealing with MS and my age I have to keep changing how I garden or how many plants I have.

I had Egyptian mint growing for 40+ years until the drought wiped it out. I missed it, especially in tea and tabouli, and went in search of it. I couldn't find it locally so looked online and only found a couple of places that had it so I ordered it from the place nearest me. I'm so happy to have it back again and it's starting to fill the barrel again so I'm ready to move some to the backyard in hopes it will spread like crazy like it did before.
I'm like Sara -- with both hands in braces with osteoarthritis that is also moving into my hips, gardening has changed drastically. I do what I can and what I can't, I don't.

Judith, the other morning I was listening to Joyce Myers on TV and she talked about the time comes when we can no longer do what we used to do and that we have to be able to let go of the old ways of doing things and do what we can, how we can.
Connie over the last passed years we both have made changes in how we garden. One of the ways we have done it is my cutting back on how many plants we have and grouping them together so watering is easier.

We have trouble with squirrels getting our tomatoes and peppers. We have mint growing all over. It has taken over over one of the old flower beds so we let it.
I've never heard of the Egyptian mint Judith.

Denise don't get me started on those nasty tree rodents. I'm always pulling up wee oak & pecan trees out of my containers and raised beds. So far, I haven't had squirrels dig up a plant.

Fortunately, as it shades the backyard in the summer, or unfortunately as it showers nuts, we have a huge pecan tree. I used to wish for squirrels as I wore out my back picking nuts up and pulling up little trees. Squirrels arrived several years ago and they are a mixed blessing. They do dig up some of my succulents in pots but the cats and I do enjoy watching them chasing each other up in the branches, jumping from one tree to another, plus they do eat most of the nuts so I don't have to pick them up.
