Okay - I don't have MaryJane's new "Stitching Room" book, but I'm just dying to know -- those of you who do, what project are YOU going to start with?

I think I'm going to try practicing some of the "hand stitching" that she shows. MJs is the first book that gives clear, written directions *plus* illustrations *plus* photographs all side-by-side. I finally feel like I can conquer all of these stitches...
It is a truly *GORGEOUS* book - both in photos and prose! I know you all are jealous right now, but it won't be much longer. And then all of your friends will be jealous of you! MJ *never* disappoints!! ~ K

I'm so excited! I finally received my copy, and I'm for sure going to start with the fancy work apron, so I have something to wear while doing the other projects!!! I can't wait to give this one a good thorough read late tonight...YAY!!!

Oh, Libbie, is that you in the picture?
I want to make the apron, but I have to locate a Kinkos or someplace to blow the pattern up. So, i want to get going on those small yo-yos for the pillow. I lvoe the extra photos and ideas to take a concept, like yo-yos, and make it your own (decorations, pins, cards).

Aren't those pincushions just so *FUN*? I'm wondering though... are the individual tins a regional thing, or have I just never seen them before?
I live not a full mile from the Kane County (IL) Flea Market, which has been rated in several magazines in Top 10 Flea Markets in the US. In the warmer months, it is enormous - I can't even get through the entire thing on a Sunday from 8a-5p moving at a brisk pace.
Anyway... I can't say that I have *ever* seen those individual cast-iron muffin tins / deep timbale "cups" before. And when I lived in Pennsylvania, I don't recall having ever seen them there, either. Are these something that is found out west? Or are they just really rare in general...like a good Griswold cast-iron ball-and-socket waffle maker? ~ K

I may seem silly, but my first project is going to be making on of those re-usable coffee cup sleeves! I LOVED that idea the second I saw it :)

Since I like mother of pearl buttons the tatted necklace is half made. But I am using a shuttle even though all things in the book are needle tatted. I know how to do both but a shuttle just has a tighter stitch so I like it more for thread. If you do yarn tatting for an afghan then definatly use a needle as it just won't work with a shuttle yarn stretches to much.

OMGoodness - you do *shuttle* tatting????? Now *that* is a lost art. I hope that when MJ does a 2nd stitchery book that you will be a contributor!
While cleaning out my grandparents house, I found a very pretty tatting shuttle. It is upstairs in my "lions head" cabinet - also from my grandmother's home. I would love a section in a forthcoming book - or even one of MJs magazines - on how to shuttle tat.
Maybe I'll take a photograph of my shuttle and post it to my blog...it's so pretty and people never know what it is. ~ K

Yep I needle tat, shuttle tat, cro-tat, hook tat different that cro-tat, and I tat with a needle this is a sewing needle this is for repair work only.
techniques in tatting that most don't know
there are many different ways to tat there are also a few more stitches than the just the ds such as a cluny leaf but these are things that most tatters do not know how to do
also I know how to lozenge tatting this involves a needle with the shuttle and bobble tatting, the catherine wheel technige,shuttle lock joins, mock rings, and split rings, multi thread tatting where you are working with 6 tatting shuttles all at once.
Padded tatting, over under joins that are used in celtic tatting, dimpled tatting and dimensional tatting, roll and block tatting, pearl tatting takes three shuttles or more if you want it fancier, turned picot joins plus other stuff but that is to much to think about at one sitting just makes my brain hurt thinking of all the tecqnies.
there are also lots of ways to hide the ends of your work so you don't have a big knot on one side every time you do a join. You should never tie knots in shuttle tatting they are ugly and they are a week spot that will fall apart first. Knots cant be helped in needle tatting but you can finishe the thread in a good way so they are not so noticable and not a week spot as well.

Sunshine, you are so talented. When I worked with my daughter at Fort Delaware, a living history museum just across the Delaware on the NY side from us, I demonstrated the garden, candlemaking and talked about one of the cabins. Myt daughter learned the ply woll and then to spin wool. She also learned to do simple weaving on a small table top loom. One young lady there did tating. I was amazed at how FAST she could do it. Now I could kick myself for not getting lessons at the lunch break. I can't beleive all the needle arts you know. What a treasure you are. I sure hope your girls and any close friends learn from you to carry o nthese skills.
