I'm a sucker for free shipping offers so today I ordered 3 blacked eyed Susan roots to be delivered in the spring. I've never grown blacked eyed Susans before and each year I like to grow something new. Info said it was a good container plant so that makes it perfect for me. Now to find a sunny spot on my back deck for it which is hard to do with the shade taking over more and more every year.

Happy Almost New Year! Sara!
I love Black-eye Susans! I grew them in a container on my patio. They did great, had 6 hours of sun.
I am already thinking about Spring too. I usually get a few seed catalogs in January. I like so try something new too. Last year I tried Golden Dewdrop,in a pot in my patio. it bloomed all summer until Thanksgiving!, I cut it back, and out it in inside lily junes play house to see it I can bring it back out in the spring, can't tolerate temps below 40 degrees.

Happy early New Year's to you. Happy to know yours did well with 6 hours of sun. That gives me hope for mine. Hope your golden dewdrop comes back in the spring. I've gotten one seed catalog from a Texas nursery.

Tara, I got them from Eden Brothers. Here's the link:

https://www.edenbrothers.com/?gclid=CjwKCAjwq5-WBhB7EiwAl-HEkogI1-D5P6YFmpNErwbJm59dZZsPNInVt3yEMPU1e0gk2rYRTeJpCRoCOxYQAvD_BwE

They are pricey but everything seems to be high these days. Once or twice a year I treat myself to something I want but don't have to have.

Tara, I just found a new native nursery out of Junction ,TX that does seeds, plugs, and plants. Native American Seed at seedsource.com. They have really helpful articles too.

I’ve been going a little crazy buying roses and irises, and my first round of spring seeds sprouted! I’ll be starting my second batch of seeds this weekend. Gonna plot out my bed rotations soon and do my winter pruning in a couple of weeks.

Thanks Connie! I got some irises from my husbands grandparents after they passed and his aunt brought me some from her homestead in tennesse after her last visit. Beautiful deep burgundy flowers. Can’t wait for them to multiply!

Shennandoah, healthy looking seedling, hope they all do as good.

I have irises I got from my grandmother's home in 1973 when the home place was sold. The irises had naturized through the years and her backyard was solid irises. I dug up six and they were all deep purple. I remember her purple irises from the 1940's.

Yesterday I received my seeds from Eden Bros Nursery. 2 zinnias; white yarrow (medicinable herb); and ruby Swiss chard. All will be sowed directly into raised galvanized tubs when it's time.

On-line I found this seed germinating solution. May give it a try.

Mix 1 tsp white vinegar with 1 cup water (doesn't specify distilled water but I will use it because of the chorine in Paris water)

Soak seeds for 6-12 hours - no more - soaking longer may damage the seeds.

Shenandoah, the burgundy ones are Sooo beautiful! The Memphis Botanic Gardens has a huge bed of every color you can think of!

Sara, I move my first iris from my Grandmother's in 1975 to my first home, I dug some up moved them out here to the country in 1987. I have Yarrow too. A lady who use to come to our salon brought in clippings one Saturday.that was 25 years ago. Still growing and blooming every year!

Good luck with all the seed starting. I won't be starting till March. I did pick up some seeds at the store and need to go through my seed box and see what else I might need. My memory is sometimes wrong, lol. Carrots is on the top of my list this year. I have had a couple bad years growing them, and I need to get some in the pantry.

Michele, I'm going to try carrots again this year. My granddaughter and I had a small raised bed that we do together. Carrots would be easy to plant. I miss gardening on a larger scale.but still enjoy raised bed and patio pots.

I've tried growing carrots several times but was never successful. Hoping you both have a bumper crop.

Saw on-line this morning that onions are a good companion plant for carrots, both deter pests. Onions are also good companions to roses.

You guys are so far ahead of me! I still have my Christmas tree up!
We got a small cut tree from my friend Tammy, who has a local greenhouse. She got the trees about a week before Thanksgiving, and the tree still has flexible limbs and is not dropping any needles. Crazy! I just can't bear to take it down, but I need to, as that is the spot that I do my seed starting. I want to try more flowers this year. I always get the seeds but plant to late or have no luck.
I love Iris, but don't have any.

Lisa, my sister still has her Christmas tree up because she can't part with it either. She told me that there have been plenty of Marches where she finally took down her tree!! So you aren't alone in enjoying your Christmas tree well past New Years Day.

Sara, you will have to let us know how your Black-eyed Susans do this year. I love those flowers too!

Lisa, I'm like Winnie's sissy, my tree is still up. I never get in a hurry to take it down before the end of January. Mine has been up past Valentine's days many times.

I'm so glad to hear I am not the only one!
Our weather has been so rainy and dreary, its nice to have the tree lights at night.
I may take it down this weekend, BUT,maybe not. LOL
Sara, I need to get some more black eyed Susans. I had some for several years, but a few years ago I utilized some mulch that for whatever reason, killed them and my echinacea

Lisa, that's one of the problems in mulch you never know where it came from or what's in it.

This will be the first time I have grown black eyed Susans so I am looking forward to seeing how they do on my back deck.

My bay that I tried to winter over on the deck has not made it since the 9 degree temps a couple of weeks ago. It has slowly died. Bay is one of my favorite herbs, so I ordered one today in a 2-gal pot. Should be here next week and it will definitely be an indoor bay. Guess I am back to trucking it outside in the spring and inside in the winter.

To justify the expense, I am giving myself an early birthday gift. Happy Birthday to me! lol

Mr. Groundhog did not see his shadow, so I am hoping and praying for an early spring. I am so ready for days of sunshine and planting season.

I bring mine in every winter, and it is well over 10 years old and still going strong.
Maybe find some handsome young guy to truck it in and out for you.
