Heather, those are twice as nice, because you can think of your Grandmother every time you look at them & the box, like a little hug for the soul.

Oh Karen and Heather, those hankies are so pretty!! I have 2. I never acquired any from my relatives so I guess they either did not use them or didn't have them. I remember my mother always having a tissue but I never had the sweet memeories of hankies!! I'm still shopping at thrift stores trying to get a few at a good price tho. Maybe the next generation will appreciate the tradition and beauty of them!

Lookie lookie what I found! In an antique/thrift shop several years ago. So easy - IF you can find 3 handkerchiefs of same pattern - OR make it scrappy with 3 different but same size handkerchiefs and a piece of grosgrain ribbon.

One handkerchief is whole in the center, a second is cut in half from middle of one side to middle of the opposite side - then pleated and sewn to the bottom of the 1st one, and the third cut diagonally corner to corner for the sides. After cutting them a small rolled hem was made on all cut edges. Pleat the 2 bottom pieces to fit the whole piece and sew with tiny hem, then sew the 2 side pieces to this unit. Next sew the grosgrain ribbon to the top with a tiny hem along the edge of the ribbon and top.

Note: the side pieces are sewn on right sides together with the other unit. However, the bottom pleated pieces and the top waistband are sewn with the large square on top of the pleated pieces and under the grosgrain ribbon.

I know - clear as mud, right?

Farmgirl hugs,

I have a few hankies, but none from my grandmother. My mother said her sister got all the handkerchiefs and she used them all. LOL!

My mom never carried hankies, just always a tissue tucked under the cuff of her sleeve. My daddy though always had hankies in his pockets. He was a machinist, so he would have large heavy duty ones in his uniform pockets. Then on Sundays, a crisp linen one in his inner suit pocket. I can remember him wiping away a few of my tears through the years.

I am loving all of the collections, and now look for them when I go thrifting.

Linda I especially want to find a set to make me an apron. Thanks for the inspiration!

Gosh, I too am loving all these wonderful old hankies! They keep coming and coming with all these awesome personal collections. I always had a hankie in my purse when I went to church as well as my Mom.

Wanda, my Dad and Grandpa always carried a handkerchief in their pocket and my hubby does the same today. Today, I keep one hanky in my purse for fun, but I always have those little purse packs of Kleenex on hand.

Linda, I have never seen one of those handy aprons but it is just adorable and a very creative idea.

Heather and Karen, your collection of hankies are lovely!
