Thank you Debbie. Thank you Wanda. Thank you Michele. Thank you Linda. I found the fabric at https://www.spoonflower.com/en/shop?on=fabric. I think it also comes in blue.
Each square represents a code. Very much like the underground railroad quilts. When Hobo's traveled around the US other Hobo's would leave markings about the area. On the back of the quilt I put a grid that tells what each square means. Like the drawing of a chicken meant "free phone", etc. A lady took those drawings and made quilt squares to represent those drawings. In the book she also goes into alot of history about the Hobo life.
The book of quilt blocks for the quilt is .
Thank you Krista, I am assuming you are interested in the story behind the squares. If you are interested in my personal story, just let me know. I am also willing to share that.

UUGH! I swear,,, my middle name should be UFO or PHD !!!
I get distracted SOOO easy! I started 2 projects,,, and now both are sitting on my messy sewing table,, because I need to pick up a skein of white yarn to make fringe for the 1 project and I need a spool of variegated sewing thread to finish up another project.. but that means I have to drive over to Spokane.. and,, honestly, I am just to lazy!

Grace, I have been there before. And probably had the exact same look on my face too! My current dilemma is that I ran out of orange yarn and needed to order more. Well the wrap is missing so I have no clue what brand or color name it is. So I took a guess. Once my yarn arrived, it was the wrong color, but not by much. So now I sit here trying to decide if it's really worth packing 4 kids to a store to find the exact match or just deal with the slight variation lol! Can candy corn have 2 different oranges??
Theresa, I would love to hear it.

Krista,
Please remember that when all of this happened it was a time when what happened in the home stayed in the home. Ours was not an easy life by any standards and my dear brother took the brunt of most of the violence. So, anyway, when he was 13 he couldn't take much more so he left and decided to ride the rails and see where he landed. Well, he landed in Hobo land. He lived that life for about 2 year (that is when my father died). Working and taking care himself. Although he was only 13, he was very talented and was able to work in many fields. Before we moved to the house across from Ben Lomond High School in Ogden we lived on a small horse ranch in Corinne, UT then in a larger horse ranch in North Ogden. So we learned a lot of skills in horses and farming. He actually did very well in finding work while hoboing. It wasn't until much later in life did I find out where he had been and what all he had seen and done.

Theresa, it's crazy to hear you talk about those places! I went to Ben Lomond High School and my parents still live right by the school. And Tremonton is just right around the corner from Corinne. I had no idea you were that familiar with my neck of the woods. When was the last time you were here? I am sorry to hear your brother had to deal with such struggles. It sounds like he was an amazing and hard working 13 year old! Thank you for sharing your story with me.

5 more UFOs until I meet my goal. I think I will actually accomplish it this year!!

Krista, I rented an RV and took my grandson on a 20 state 63 day trip in 2019 and one of the places we went to was the ole homestead in Corinne as well as by our ole place in Pleasant View. Of course, to Promatory Point for the golden spike reenactment. I really have to tell you, it was very hard for me to leave. I love Utah. We spent a ton of time in the Uintah Mountains hunting, fishing and camping when I lived there. It is such a lovely state. The National Parks in the South and the Mountains. I do miss it.
Yes my brother was an amazing man. He was very hard working and very talented in woodworking, animals, art, and of course survival skills. He passed away a few years ago and I miss him terribly.
I still have family there. I have some in Roy, Ogden, and Layton. I hope that I can get back out there before I die to gaze upon the beauty of the place!

Another UFO done.
Because embroidery is not my strong suit, I did change one thing about the apron. I cut out a second apron to make it lined so the back threads wouldn't show.
