I read some past posts about this and I see Sunshine is very talented in making bobbin lace. My question is, is it tedious work, or is it kind of relaxing like spinning or knitting? Also, I am thinking of purchasing the 30 kit, but I noticed in your pictures sunshine that you had something that looked like you were rolling the lace up on it, or was this just the pillow? I just want to make sure I get what I need to learn correctly. I don't want to make it any harder than it is. It looks like it could be hard to learn. What you saw is indeed just the pillow with a roller called "the Princess lace machine" it is not really a machine but hat is what it was called. It is one from the previous turn of the century over 100 years old a collectors piece. The piece of lace that was on there was a more advanced piece the 30.00 kit is a good starting place to see if you do or don't like it. At first it is not like spinning or knitting as you are concentrating on not making mistakes and learning your cross and twist and where to place the pin. After a while this becomes second nature. I do not recommend getting a pillow like mine unless you want to collect and things like that I was lucky and got mine for about 100 dollars usually those are around 500.00. Start off with torchon patterns they are the easiest.
Sunshine. I have yet to start anything on my bobbin lace. as I have to make a cover for the board. Question. I have noticed in some pictures there is a piece of something holding your work at the top. It looks like a plack of something? Do you use just pins or is it something you have to purchase to anchor your work at the top.? Pinkroses
if you are talking about the little plaque that reads princess that is actually below my thread on the pillow and it doesn't hold my work it is just what the manufacture of pillow did decorative. It could also be the brown paper you are talking about then that is my pricking ( my pattern) and that is covered in clear contact paper to make it last longer.
There are some divider pins shown one picture those are used to hold bobbins not in use out of the way. In the picture there is a wood (ebony) divider and two small vintage shirt pins that I also use as dividers.
As for making a cover it is just a big piece of fabric with elastic sewn on the edges should take more than an hour or 2 to make.
Sunshine. when I got my kit it had a large strofoam board. I didn't like it at all , So I went and got a 10" inch round one. at the craft store. I have to cover it and fix it so I can take it off to wash. I just keep putting it off. But I really want to learn. I hope I can . pinkroses
