I have wild irises that grow in my backyard. The snow is melting so I went back there to play today. There were a bunch of dried seed pods from last year so I emptied them into a jar and got a surprising number of seeds. Does anyone know what to do next? Can I plant them this year? Do I need to start them indoors?
You'll do far better dividing the corms, or the bulby things in the ground. Use a potato fork to carefully dig them up, and divide them with your pocket knife or even a sharp spade into new clumps. These should be dug up and divided every few years anyhow.
You did a good thing pulling the seed pods though. They steal energy from the blooms. Next year, cut them off as soon as your plants are done flowering. That puts all the energy into production of blooms next year.
