What are you mother's day traditions?

In my family we would make my mom breakfast, give her our mother's day gifts and then do an activity that she would enjoy or whatever she wanted to do for that day. Often we would go to the mountains and spend the day enjoying the outdoors. My mom is an accomplished artist so we would often be taking pictures or hanging out as my mom set up her sketch pad or easel.

Then we usually would either take Mom out for dinner or the family would make her favorite dinner (depending on how family finances were at the moment)

Also I just read that it is traditional to wear roses for mother's day. You are supposed to wear red if your mom is still alive, white if she has passed on and pink if you are not sure.

So what does your family do for Mother's Day?

My neice always has a picnic at her house for my MIL. All six children come w/spouses and children. We BBQ and bring a dish to pass. The kids ususally get to fish in the pond, and if it's dry enough we play Bocce.
Always exciting up here in NY, it could be 70 degrees or 30!!!

My mother and I always drive to Grove City, Ohio, where my grandmothers (both great and "regular")lived and aunts as well. Since Mother's day is around the last of our potential frost dates, we visit this wonderful nursery out in the country where (we think :)) they have the most beautiful geraniums and plants in ever. It used to be me, my mom, my Gran Helen, her sister, Bernice, and their mother, my great gran Theodocia. Both my gran and great gran are gone, so this year, it's just me, mom and Aunt Bernie. It will be different, but it's still tradition.
After we get flowers, we always get fried chicken. I'm really not a fan (I know, I know) but I've never said anything...it's just "what" we do on Mother's Day!

This year will be different, also, because I'm doing the Ugly Duckling play, so I will take the Friday before off and go up with Mom.

I love hearing about Mother's Day - since becoming a mother, I have a new perspective, and I realize that all those years growing up, what we REALLY should have done for my mom is not breakfast in bed, but letting her SLEEP!!!(hee hee). We did breakfast in bed for my mom growing up - my Dad always helped us with it. We also did cards...

Now, I call my mom and talk about what she means to me - then and now - and it is so wonderful to really be sure that I am saying these grateful things to her - and that she is hearing them. Maybe, now that I think of it, life's too short to wait for Mother's day to do that.....

XOXO, Libbie

We usually tried to make breakfast for Our Mother too when we were kids.. ( What a mess! ) So she ALWAYS insisted on us all going out for dinner!

But now as a mother of grown kid myself.. it's pretty speradic..
sometimes we go out.. sometimes we stay home.. if we stay home.. then it's always a big BBQ.. & we end up playing croquet! which seems to be my families all time favorite sport..
Unfortunatly.. These guys don't play too fair!
You have to protect your ball Or it's getting whacked out of the yard.. & into the field.. THEN THE REAL GAME IS ON!!

So.. Mother's Day at home is funner for us.. but may not be safer!

My 4 sons started cooking me dinner on Mom's day about 15 yrs ago.( they are now 22,25,27,& 29) I always told them that was the best gift. When they were younger it was nice to know that once a year I did not have to plan, cook,or clean it up. They still show up just like clock work and cook and do dishes. Sometimes we go to the state park for a picnic and sometimes it's here at the house. Since they are grown and moved out it's also an added treat to see them together. The youngest lives in ND so he won't be here this yr, but the rest will show up.
My oldest son has something he does once a year. It's not always on Mother's day,but when the first daisies bloom he picks some an puts them in a vase for me.(Daisies are my favorite)
Sometimes I'll come home and they are just here sitting on the table. No phone call or anything else just the flowers. It's nice to know he remembers.

Kathie, I loved the croquet story. I can picture this game of croquet "on Steroids" :)

You need to get youself a croquet set Teddie!
I always loved it as a kid & wanted one for us so badly & one year my daughter got one for Mothers day for me about 7 years ago i think.. But it just seemed too small .. we used it for a few years then We found this REALLy awesome set at Costco!! WOW!!
really nice.. & the mallets are a much better size in proportion to our much larger adult bodies too!
My kids are about the same ages as yours!
I only have the 3 though.. but my daughter Jennifer is my youngests.. when she has her birthday this summer she'll be 26..Joshua will then turn 27 & jeffrey just turned 28..
They all still live close by.. so i'm really lucky too..
You have a happy Mothers Day .. & enjoy your Daisey's

Oh! A croquet set! I may have to request one myself. I remember going to my Grams house to play - always had her in stitches playing it.

My Mother's Day is always the same. Pack everyone up in the truck and head to the nursery. I load up on the plants for the yard and garden. Hubby picks out his hot pepper varieties and I pick the other veggies. My girls each pick out what they like for me. I could really spend an entire day there. (who couldn't right?)

When they get tired, we head out for lunch somewhere. I need to look into where I want to go. Last year it was Culvers, I think I want something different this year.

Kathie, We have a croquet set , however our yard does not have a flat spot to play. It would be a really amusing game. All the balls would be in the creek. I can see it now.... some one would be in the creek yelling "FORE".
Aren't they all fun?

For the last three years (new tradition), my two daughters and I go to my mother's and have our pictures made all together (including my younger sister). With the coupons from the Picture People studio, I can give her those photos for close to nothing, and we all have a memory of the years. It has been a lot of fun to have the pictures made- we don't worry about if we match or if the baby was crying...
