My whole family is going on a camping trip in May and I am looking for some ideas for kid outdoor crafts. There will be 8 grandkids and I have been appointed the craft person, lol!

I think I will take some tape along and some yarn so that they can make their own nature bracelets. I have thought about leaf prints, but dont really care to pack paint. I can just imagine paint spilling all over the inside of my backpack...ewww!

I thought about taking a blank tshirt for each kiddo and some fabric crayons so that they can draw their favorite part of the trip on their tshirt.

Just thought I would see if any of you have some ideas.

This isn't a craft as much as a game, but we have played tic tac toe making the "board" out of sticks and then using stones and acorns or crab apples for the X's and O's.

It might be fun to make a camping journal that they can write in too. You could use brown paper lunch bags folded in half with papers inside. Fasten them with twine. Decorate with twigs. If you have crayons, they could make fun rubbings of different leaves that they find.

A scavenger hunt would be fun too.

Have a wonderful time on your trip.

Pinecone birdfeeders? Pineneedle baskets, use ink to stamp things you find in nature. Texture rubbings.

Make sketchbooks ahead of time by folding computer paper and stapling the edges. Keep journal/sketchbooks of activities you do and the plants and animals you see.

Buy some poster paints and paint Rock Pets.

Press flowers and other objects for a project when you get home.

I've got more ideas if you want them!

Jewelry, art, baskets, etc.

Please...keep them coming. I have a notebook that I am jotting them all down.

I think it might be a nice thread to start anyway.

We always bring plaster of paris with us so we can make casts of animal tracks. Bring some old plastic containers with for mixing. You'll need a few heavy pieces of cardboard to form a ring to keep your plaster from running. We have great fun doing this.

Here's a link to a couple nature journals:

Years ago, I had my boys gather up leaves, from trees, ferns whatever, and place them between a folded piece of white cotton cloth. Then pound on them with a hammer. The imprints are left on the cloth. Then we went to the sewing machine and did a border around the edges. So they got to learn to sew too. That part would not work for you in the woods, but something to finish them off with later. Michele

How about an outdoor loom for nature weavings?

You find two sturdy branches about the same size (length & girth). They should be green, not too dry, you don't want them to break. Tie the first one horizontal from a tree or post-it needs to hang freely. Then you hang the other branch from the first using yarn or string. It will hang parallel below the first branch. Make the distance between the two as long as you'd like your weaving to be. Next you will tie string/yarn vertically between the two blanches, spacing fairly evenly, 3-4 inches apart.
Now the fun begins! Take the kids out walking to find things to weave into their project. Long grasses, leaves, flowers, feathers, bits of fabric or string can all be used. You can use up any old yarn you might have laying around too. This can be a weekend project that is left hanging and worked on as the kids feel led or as they find things to add.

How about identifying trees or leaves doing sort of a scavenger hunt?

Pressing flowers & or/making a press?

Sounds like great fun to me!

I can't remember what they're called, but you make them with brightly colored yarn and sticks. The bigger the sticks, the more interesting they look. You wind the string around each stick, then stretch it to the next stick, then wind and stretch. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Kids love 'em. ~ K

Rhonda, that outdoor loom sounds incredible...maybe I can pull that off.

Kaylyn...god's eyes! yes!

Deb, I have never made castings, but that is a great idea!

Texture rubbings will be a definite!

Thank you ladies!

How about that paper that is "developed" by exposing it to sunlight. I'll bet you could make all kinds of neat leaf prints and such and no paint to spill.

I had a couple of ideas some you won't need to pack anything.
dandelion chains garlands crowns etc (can use any flower or long grass)
bark boats( just need bark, sticks, and leaves )
finger knitting to make cords need yarn or you can braid using dried grass
making a treasure map or scavenger hunt

The Sun prints are fun that Mary was talking about and would be great to add to the journal that Ann and Julie suggested. The product is called Sunprint Kit by Lawrence hall of science. It is really small about the size of an envelope although I am sure you can get bigger contains 12 sheets for about $5.00

My kids love to collect rocks on our walks and then we add them to the Garden or Flower beds. You can also with not much mess make them inton Pet Rocks.

A good glass of wine and time whiled away with friends is sublime
