Hello, Farmgirls!

My niece and her family (husband, three year old daughter, and one year old son) will be moving to the Edwardsville, IL area in June. Her husband is from the St. Louis area (rural) but moved to the Pacific NW a few years back to be closer to my niece. He's losing his job in June, plus housing prices are crazy in the Tacoma and Seattle areas. Her dh's family is still west of St. Louis, so they'll be closer to his family now. I think it is a good move for them, although it will be tough ever seeing them all now. Of course they'll be occasionally visiting my brother and his family, but they live over in the Tacoma-area and we live in Spokane (300 miles away). The hardest part about it all is my eleven year old daughter adores my niece and her kids. She's with them right now at the end of her spring break. My niece has been trying to figure out ways to get my daughter back for a visit in the future, maybe flying her out once a year for a visit.

I was just wondering if there is anyone out there in the Farmgirl network who lives in that area or nearby, or knows it very well? I'd just like to know what it's like. I have been in that area in the past, but don't really know anything about it...

Thanks in advance for any information anyone can give me.

Karin

I haven't been to Edwardsville since back in my college days. What I can tell you that I remember about it: it's close enough to the Mississippi that there are great valley's and lush, fertile trees. It's a very nice pretty area. The people that I met in college from Edwarsville were all memorable - for being the friendly, genuine, down-to-earth people you'd *want* to meet leaving home for the first time, KWIM?

Edwardsillve is far enough south that it picks up quite a bit of heat and humidity from the Gulf Stream - Gulf of Mexico air currents that curve northward. If memory serves, I believe it is Zone 5 for gardening. That area gets hit more often with ice storms than snow storms in the wintertime.

Edwardsville is "semi-urban." It isn't so close to St. Louis to have an unbearable amount of congestion or be *too* urban. But it is close enough to get good TV coverage, visit a *fabulous* zoo, get great rates for air travel, and have a good selection of museums. It's also about 2.5 hours from Springfield, IL which is our state capital, home of many museums, the Illinois State Fair, and many more fun things to do.

I wish that I had some information to give you about a Farmgirl chapter in the area, but I'm about 5 hours northeast. The good news that I *can* give you about that area: people are genuinely friendly! If there isn't one there yet, there probably will be one shortly. If not - maybe she'll be the bright sunshine to start one up!

Best of luck to her and her family in making this move. Sorry for you that you're losing out on the deal. :-(

Karin -- I was raised in Central IL and had relatives that lived near Edwardsville. It is a wonderful area in Southern IL -- great college town. Lots and lots of lush landscape and countryside. AND some of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet. I wish them all the best with their move and am sure they'll love it there.
