Oh, ladies, ladies, ladies, you are not going to believe what has been sitting right under my nose for almost a year!!!

After dating for the requisite amount of time, we've moved in together, making the most of our five acres outside of Santa Fe. With the last of my things being moved in, we're having to ask ourselves what we want to store, what we want to sell, what we want to transform with crafting, and what we want to keep. We've been moving this inordinately heavy nightstand/end table from room to room, unable to commit. I always marvel at just how heavy it is. When we looked at it again last night, Z says, "It ought to go in your craft room, really." I'm thinking with a wry smile, "Oh, really? My craft room? How do you figure?" Before I get a word out, he adds, "It is a sewing machine after all."

It's a WHAT?

Girls, it's a sewing machine. His grandmother's. The table flips to reveal the vintage--WORKING!--Singer machine below.

Yeah, okay. It can go in my craft room.

Happy Friday, everyone!

Had to share the news.

That's great. What was his reaction when you got excited about the sewing machine...something like, "Isn't it obvious? What else would it be?"

How exciting...
check out a post by Bluewren-Treadle sewing machine...both Denise & Jana posted some web sites to find replacement parts for the old treadle sewing machines.....
How awesome for you to be the new "caretaker' of this delightful sewing machine.

It's privlege to have this silly old thing. I purrs, I tell you. Makes my later model machine look like a cheap knock-off. I feel incredibly blessed to have found it. Now...

Does anyone have a good idea for a first project on it? I haven't sewed in quite a while. I'd like the first thing to be something meaningful, that Zach's grandmother would smile to see...

Any suggestions?

I third the Apron!

I usually sew once a year-for my costume for a local parade. My costume just has to hold together long enough to make it to the end :-).
After not sewing for a while I dragged 'old betsy' out and finished off an apron I had already cut out and never finished-only took me 5 hours! hahhahahahahhahaeeehahaha. Not bad for a "one hour project"-or so the pattern said. Anyway, even though it took forEVER to finish it was good practise for the next project...a MaryJane's apron-which I am happy to say only took a couple of hours (maybe less, if I hadn't added some ric-rac).
I was so inspired by the whole apron project that I started finding lots of old apron patterns in thrift stores-one dating 1946!
Happy Sewing!
