| I'm in the market for a sewing machine also. My 30 year old Singer bit the dust. A dealer around is here is having a special on the Janome DC 2007 for $399. She says they normally sell for about $700. What do you guys think? Is that really a good price? Is it worth splurging on a good machine,or will a $150 Singer or Brother do? I would like to have success and sew for a long time! Thanks! |

Mima,
I think I've tried about every major brand of sewing machine out there and owned and sold several. Janomes are fine machines. They don't happen to be my absolute favorite, however. I purchased a vintage Singer that I love. I know that Singer has gotten a bad reputation with its extremely cheap machines that don't work well. That being said, they are now under new American ownership. They have a new line of machines called the "Inspiration" machines and the most expensive one is about 250.00. They are made in either China or Brazil, but truth be told, even Berninas have machines that they outsource to Thailand and China.
I agree with Lizabeth, check out patternreview. You also may want to check the home websites of various sewing machine brands to see what features their products have.
I would probably steer clear of any super-cheap machines, as the quality can be hit or miss. The manufacture of these machines is usually farmed out to the cheapest contracter bidding and quality can vary greatly.

| Thanks you guys for the advice! I'll check out the Inspiration on the website Lizbeth recommended. Ive been spending alot of time there! Just a little overwhelmed at all the choices! I need a sewing fairy godmother to tell me which one to buy! I hate making decisions! Thanks again! |

Hi Mima!
I have had Singers, Kenmore, and now a Pfaff. The Singers seemed to have Tension issues. My 1976 Kenmore is my old reliable. I sewed all my kids clothes on it for yrs. It still gets some use, but has things that just don't work any more. My Pfaff, bought in 1997, was a guilt present from my former DH. (I think he was trying to get on my good side since things were not going well with us) He's long gone,but I still have the machine. It is an embroidery machine and does everything except it does not have the softwear. I have used the embroidery part some to monagram. I enjoy all the decorative and types of pre programmed stitches. I have found that I don't use the more intricate embroidery. I enjoy doing hand embroidery more than machine. I feel more of a sense of accomplishment. Doing on the machine is too much like programming a computer for me. I do like all the added features though. I probably would not have gotten this fancy of a machine,but I'm certainly enjoying it. Think about what you will use it for. Do you Quilt more? Embroider more? There are machines for both. I sew more clothes and home decor . Also look at the little stuff. Mine has a needle threader I would actually die without! Little stuff can be the seller I think. Enjoy your search. I'm sure you've saved enough money sewing for the last 30 yrs on that machine that you can invest in one you'll enjoy for another 30.

| I bought a Janome on Ebay last year and it is great! I paid 300.00 including S&H. Something did not work and I wrote the seller. She said she would pay 1/2 of repair or I could return it. I planned on getting a tune-up when I got it anyway (which cost 100.00). When I brought it in, some little thing was wrong and the fix was included in the 100.00 tune-up fee. It is an embroidery machine as well. I have a Janome serger as well. I love those machines. Good Luck |

Oh, splurge!! But make sure that is truly a sales price. Just do some research online a bit and you will find out. If you do a google search with the brand name and model number you will find alot of information. I love my Kenmore...made by Janome and I just bought a Janome serger. My mother gave me a super duper janome embroidery machine and I also have a new home from my mom......I am really sewing machine blessed. Oh, and my old serger is a Bernette and I still LOVE that one to. It is a basic no frills.
