I wanted to share a picture of my favorite hen with you gals...."Scalpy" thus named after surviving a hawk attack, but losing the top of her scalp. She is missing a circular 1 inch portion of her scalp (feathers and skin). This attack happened about 3 weeks ago. After the attack, she found her way back to the hen house only to be attacked again by her housemates.....poor Scalpy. Well, we moved her into the horse barn (where our 16 ducks spend their nights) and she spends her days following us around or following the ducks or horses. She is one "bad" chicken....if any of the barn cats come close she dishes out a warning peck. Everyone respects Scalpy....she is queen of the barn, now (and a pretty good layer, too. Odd, after 3 weeks, she has had no grown on top of her head....nothing covering her skull.....I guess she will stay that way. My next project is to make a "bonnet" to protect her head from the hot summer sun.

She is a beautiful hen. It doesn't look like her mishaps have harmed her in anyway. It is really amazing that no skin has grown back over the exposed skull area. Chickens are amazingly tough creatures- They can be rather silly sometimes but I actually really respect them.

OUCH! Poor baby. Glad to hear she's making the best of it! Your idea of making her a bonnet reminded me of my childhood storybook of "The Little Red Hen"!

I think a bonnet is an excellent idea, maybe a nice egg print in yellow.

She certainly looks like the Queen of the Roost. Quite the air of authority about her, for sure!! A little bonnet would be adorable. I hope she will keep it on. She would look like those old cartoons from the 30's when all the farm animals wore clothes!!
