I recently found out that milk banks all across the nation are running dangerously low on human breast milk. As a new mom, it scares me to think that there are people out there that can't produce breast milk for their babies who need to get it from banks- only to find out there isn't any left. One of the articles that I read gave a case study of a baby who is so allergic to all formulas that she has to have breast milk, but her mother is physically unable to produce milk.

I am going to pump and freeze breast milk for my baby's use when I have to be away from her, but I am seriously considering pumping to donate as well. What do you ladies think?

Alee

I think it's a fabulous idea if you have what it takes to do it. Years ago, the Red Cross would give you all the supplies you needed including pick up for donated breast milk. I'm not sure whether they still do it or not.

The center that I contacted in Denver will ship me a container to mail it back to them in. They pay all the shipping charges and I just have to send in a blood sample with the first mailing. I hate needles but just thinking that if my baby ever had to have banked breast milk- and there wasn't any- yikes! I am also trying to get over my silly fear of needles so the next time the blood donation bus comes to town I can donate blood as well. I have O- blood so I kind of feel like it is my duty to donate whenever I can.

What a wonderful way for you to help out those babies. I think it is great idea and very sweet of you to want to do that.

Alee, that is a wonderful way to share your love of your baby. What a BIG heart you have!

There are a few Mother's Milk Banks in the country; if you contact one of them, I'm sure they will be able to give you the info you need. Additionally, if there is a board certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) in your area, she will also be able to direct you.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in the hospital where I work uses human milk from the San Jose, California milk bank. It is such a gift for those babies - some would die without it. And you might be interested to know that other patients also benefit from Mother's milk. The healing you are giving when you donate your milk truly is a blessing.
You have my true admiration!
