I just wanted to document that I just squished A MOSQUITO that buzzed in front of the computer. This signals the beginning of the battle here at this farm......grrrrrr.....

It's not exactly a barnyard "buddy," but how do you deal with these little pesky ones at your places?

XOXO, Libbie

I put big pots of lemon balm around the patio and have one in the garden that I will take a stem or two from and rub on exposed skin in the evenings when they're at their worst. We have two natural ponds on the property and the frogs just don't seem to be as plentiful as they used to be. It seems to work pretty well and I won't use citronella or put deet on my skin.

WE staple plastic baggies full of water above the door and around the porch. I have NO IDEA why it works but it does!

I live near a reservoir that gets pretty swampy around the edges. We use:

Amazon lights-candles & torches (like citronella, but a little different)
Citronella torches
Natural bug spray
Mosquito magnet-uses CO2 to lure them in and traps them

We also own a few bug shirts-they have netting for really bad days.

Julie,
I have never heard of this...how interesting!! So do you staple them closed or open? And what size baggies do you use? Oh I cant wait to hear more about this!

For us here in Okinawa, they get bad and I use Skin So Soft from Avon on my kids (the original one) It seems to work well. But am so excited to hear more ways because my son is VERY allergic to their bites ( has been in the hospital because of it) so anyway that is healthy and safe I am anxious to know about!

Libbie- I can't believe you are being pestered by mosquitoes already! We have them here, sadly. Too warm a winter. I hate them. I try to plant rose geraniums around us to ward them off. I'm not really sure how well that works!
I had not heard of this trick for mosquitoes, but I have seen people staple bags of water up to keep flies away. My mom, aunt, a friend and I went to Rome (GA) one time for a little antiquing excursion. Lunch was a must, so we ate at a little sandwich shop nearby. They had bags everwhere!! It was just a bit disconcerting to discover their purpose. Sort of an "Ew!" moment. If they had that many flies to deter....well, you know.

Ok Julie, tell us more about these baggies ; ) I have been allergic to mosquitoes all my life and I'm usually in the house by 5:00 pm every night. I even have to watch the 4th of July from inside so I'm really interested in how you place them.

Yes, yes, Julie!!! We need details about the bags! We had snow last night, so I'm hoping that the freeze just froze those little beasts right in their tracks - I'm guessing, however, that all it really did was to make more water deposits where they can gleefully reproduce. Ugh.

I'm sure going to plant lemon balm and rose geraniums - I love the smells, and bonus if it helps with mosquitos!

Our mosquitos have been buzzing about of late as well.

Jenny, that's an interesting idea...somehow I doubt City Boy will go for plastic baggies stapled to his house, but I can sure give it a try in the barn!
