Debbie - I'm so glad you like your apron and other little things I made. I actually got my package from you today. What a treasure!!!! I love the lap quilt you made with all the little buttons to embellish it. And the second feed sack on the back with your signature makes it extra special. The "ditty" bag is wonderful too! I can always use yarn and buttons. The wrist pin cushion is a great idea. I can't wait to try it out tomorrow :) I can't believe we've never been swap partners before!!!!! I'm very happy we were partners for this swap. Thank you so much for such a wonderful swap :)
Here's some pictures for everyone to see:
some up close pictures of the embellishmenst:
The chicken feed sack on the back:
And the ditty bag:
Thanks again Debbie!!

Oh Heather I am so happy you like your Lap Quilt, I was just so unsure if I could pull it off. It was my joy to make it for you, it really was. I too could not believe we had never been swap partners over the years. I am happy we finally got to be partners and hope we will be again.
Such a fun and informative swap, I have learned so much. Thank you Jean for being our hostess.
Thank you again Heather for my Apron, bookmark and mug rug. Glad you are back Grace I missed you.

Jean, I am speechless. The quality of your work is amazing! The table runner, the roll holder, the coasters, and the chicken are gorgeous, not to mention the Feed Sack is as well! I love everything, including the jar of buttons & the Depression Cookbook. You are truly inspiring! Thank you so much!
Today is my birthday & your package made my day!

I found this interesting poem about feed sacks to be really enlightening. Some of the uses I didn't know about. I never thought about them. Such as diapers, milk strainers and etc. But during that era I suppose you used anything you could get your hands on.
The 1930’s Flour Sack, by Colleen B. Hubert
In that long ago time when things were saved, when roads were graveled and barrels were staved and there were no plastic wrap or bags, and the well and the pump were way out back, a versatile item, was the flour sack.
Pillsbury’s best, mother’s and gold medal, too stamped their names proudly in purple and blue. The string sewn on top was pulled and kept the flour emptied and spills were swept. The bag was folded and stored in a sack That durable, practical flour sack.
The sack could be filled with feathers and down, for a pillow, or t’would make a nice sleeping gown. it could carry a book and be a school bag, or become a mail sack slung over a nag. It made a very convenient pack, That adaptable, cotton flour sack.
Bleached and sewn, it was dutifully worn as bibs, diapers, or kerchief adorned. It was made into skirts, blouses and slips. And mom braided rugs from one hundred strips she made ruffled curtains for the house or shack, from that humble but treasured flour sack!
As a strainer for milk or apple juice, to wave men in, it was a very good use, as a sling for a sprained wrist or a break, to help mother roll up a jelly cake, as a window shade or to stuff a crack, we used a sturdy, common flour sack!
As dish towels, embroidered or not, they covered up dough, helped pass pans so hot, tied up dishes for neighbors in need, and for men out in the field to seed. They dried dishes from pan, not rack that absorbent, handy flour sack!
We polished and cleaned stove and table, scoured and scrubbed from cellar to gable, we dusted the bureau and oak bed post, made costumes for October (a scary ghost) and a parachute for a cat named jack. From that lowly, useful old flour sack!
So now my friends, when they ask you As curious youngsters often do, “before plastic wrap, elmers glue and paper towels, what did you do?” tell them loudly and with pride don’t lack, “grandmother had that wonderful flour sack!”
“Kindness is Free, Sprinkle that Stuff Everywhere.”

Oh my yes indeed! Flour sacks were treasures FOR SURE! My grandma made panties for her little girls, slips and bras as they grew into teens.
My grandma had her ball of string, and so do I...only mine is from chicken feed sacks.
As a child when we went to grandmas we always slept on sheets made from flour sacks. Never fear, she had real sheets in their original packages...up in the cabinet above her big old chest freezer. As far as I know they were never used. Grandma loved her very own homemade sheets.

Grace, thanks. My grandma was a very resourceful woman! I only had one grandma, because my daddy's mother died when he was only ten.

I have not heard anything at all from Niki. I haven't heard that she received my feedsack projects and I haven't received the ones from her. I really had fun making these items, so I thought I'd at least share them with the group. I hope she is ok. I will send her another email.

Lovely work Darlene. Nikki has been very silent in another swap of mine also. Her partner in that one and I have tried several times to reach her by email to no avail. I know she has had some health issues lately, and I only hope they haven't escalated. If anyone out there has heard from her recently, please let us know. hugs, jean

I have received lovely gifts from Judith, who was my swap-mate from Feed Sacks. She made placemats, potholder and a cast iron pot holder. She did a lovely job and I thought the potholder was a wonderful idea. I am going to make some for Christmas gifts, Thank you so much Judith Kathy
