I just CANNOT believe that it's March. Where did the winter go? The snow's still here, but I sure do have springtime in my soul right now. There is so much to do to prepare for garden/yard/animals/farmers' market right now.
Here, we'll finish lambing in a few weeks - YAY! So we'll be able to go back to "regular" sheep care for a while, and that'll be a relief. I'm hoping to have the house cleaned out by the end of the month, and my seeds started for the garden. I am really looking forward to having a big garden again this year. I just loved the zinnias - they are so traditional and beautiful...ANYWAY, back to the farm...I also want to get the "chicken moat" finished, and get a milking setup for Bridget, the Dexter, and get ready for Mona's calf if it's a heifer (and BOY, do I hope it is!).
What do you all do on your farms in March?
XOXO, Libbie

Will be calving here, with the beefers in a week or two. I had to get rid of about half my animals last year, because of dry weather. So will have 7 calves this year hopefully. I calve them in the barn, as we also have a wolf problem around here. I keep the 22 handy, and a spotlight. Will start garden seeds the middle of March. Then of course spring cleaning. I am hoping this year is my turn to get my house fixed up. My dh will finish his last house, as he will only work construction part time, he got a job in town last summer. Regular paycheck is nice, and insurence too. March here in like a lion- look forward to out like a lamb. Michele |

Spring is in the air. I dropped off my daughter at school this am & it's right across from a horse farm. They were running around snorting, full of .... and vinegar!! Loved it.

You know, I am kind of glad it's March...I love spring time and I am really looking forward to my new little place...I can't wait to plan my garden. Maybe get the kids some chicks for Easter.
I will have alot of fixing up, and some remodeling to do on the farmhouse before I can turn my attention to the yard and alot of different animals..but it is all very exciting.
I always feel so "alive" when the weather starts to warm up.

Oh boy, I'm trying to not even think about Spring yet, though the calendar says it's this month...my Burpee seed catalog says that for zone 3 the approximate last frost-free date is mid-JUNE!! June???, isn't that summer??!! I've always lived in zone 5 which was at least late May...maybe I'll go stick some silk flowers out in my snowbanks on the 21st... |

Yesterday it was 80 degrees here. It was wonderful. Today is sunny but the wind is blowing and I think it is about 50 or so. Yesterday was just beautiful! It made me realize spring is really coming.

Spring...oh I can't wait. I really need to sit down during this rainy time and get my act together. I started seeds here at the nursery the first week in January. Here a lot of people like to have veggie starts for their greenhouses, so I always have to be ready. It's nice seeing the little cauliflower, broccoli and sweet peas coming up. I even have a few tomato plants almost ready. Isn't it cool? Of course I don't have time to get into my greenhouse at home, but maybe I can rectify it this weekend. Heather actually has a weekend off from horsing around, so I get a break to spend sometime at home.
You know I look around we have 5 acres and we are hardly using 1. I have a fruit orchard, a little greenhouse, the house, the shack and that's it. Oh and of course Dodges pen & the chicken coop. I sure would like time to clear and put in gardens (cutting, herb, bird) maybe some day.
So that’s what I am doing. Daydreaming at the seed catalogs, daydreaming out the windows and looking forward to the fresh rush of spring!
I think my slogan for this spring will be "better planning, reduce excess and enjoy the birds!"
When I feel spring coming I have to plant or I’ll go crazy! |

Libbie...I see you "want to get the chicken moat finished"! How far along are you? DH is wondering if the moat will end up being grass-free after the chickens are there for awhile. What does your experience tell you, please? We are hoping to have the chicken runs steadily grassy... you can see the dilemma.
So much to do! Ann

Oh, I'm dreaming of spring! It's my favorite season and it should be around the corner but the weather we've been having just doesn't feel that way...lol Hopefully March is coming in like a lion so it can go out like a lamb ;)

Spring is a season of the heart. I've just gathered some fabric for a "cherry blossom" quilt. My seedlings are up and nagging me for garden space, and snow is melting off the first shoots of my tulips. Everything is so possible (if muddy). I love it. It's chaos...snow, sun, clouds, growth...

Walked the farm a million times, just waiting for the right time to get started planting the garden! Southern States has the "baby plants" ready for sale but the weather here is still bad. It's gonna be in the "teens" here for a few more nights. Maybe I can start planting in April.......... |

Saturday was a teaser in my part of Pennsylvania - I could turn off the heat and actually open some windows to air out the house. I removed some Christmas decorations from the yard and picked up some sticks and trash in the yard and then sunday was old man winter with little snow squalls
I have my burpee catalog beside my bed with 3m tags on the flowers i want to try and grow in my wonderful clay soil

Walked the 33 acres today, nearly in the 50's. Planning where to put the house, orchard, ponds, barns, wildlife habitat, treehouse, etc... So much fun to daydream on a sunny day. And it doesn't cost a dime to daydream!
We bought a gate today to put up to keep people from dumping their trash on the land. Why do people assume that farmland at the end of a road is a dumpsite? Next, the clean up. I don't mind, I'm just so happy to daydream out there.
We make a difference. |

Oh I forgot spring time also brings Maple Syrup time. We have 30 taps, so we usually get 7-8 gallons of syrup. Enough for us. And I hope to get walking again, got a few pounds to lose. |

Libby, What do you take to the farmer's market?
Winter is a great time to dream about how perfect everything in the yard and garden will look "next year". Spring is wonderful....but as I looked around today, there is soooooo much to do! The spring flowers are starting to poke green, and we have willow tree branches everywhere!!!! In fact, I'd just better get off the computer and get busy :)! Ann http://annforrester.tohe.com |

Well, this year I hope to take a bounty of flowers, along with a staple of garlic and onions, as well as some things, like eggplants, that the folks around here don't normally grow themselves. I think I'll market some of the more unusual things with recipes, so people who haven't used them before won't get them home and wonder what on earth to do with 'em!
Today I was just looking at the garlic -- and it's about 3-4" tall! It's so exciting to see those little green shoots. It sure makes all of the autumn work worth it.
Still to do: finish up lambing (I can't really do that one on my own schedule!), dig compost into the veggie and flower areas, re-setup the driplines for things, fantasize about owning a tractor....![](icons/icon_smile_wink.gif)
