I have some questions for all you who sell on Etsy. I was wondering if it is best to build up a moderate sized inventory before opening up your shop or if it is better to just post a couple of items to start with.

I really want to open a shop soon but I am going to wait until we get moved and settled in the new house. In the meantime I thought I would make up some crocheted items and start planning on what else I want to have in the shop.

I was thinking of getting my own credit card specifically for using for the Etsy stuff. For both supplies and for paying on my Etsy account. I was wondering if this is a smart idea or not? I would pay it off monthly.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated and feel free to tell me things I might not have thought about either.

Thanks in Advance

Shelle

Coming from someone that just opened a shop with just a couple items ready I'd suggest having a bit of an inventory unless you put your items together very quickly. It'd probably be good to list 4 or 5 items and maybe every few days list one or two more things. Also promote yourself on the etsy forums, it seems that people have good luck getting noticed by other users that way.

I don't have an opinion here or there on opening a credit card specifically for that. If you're certain that you'd pay it off monthly then I don't see a problem with it.

Good luck with your shop!

I set up shop and threw a ton up right away and I think it was the best thing for me. I have a lot of bartering type conversations going on right now because of it I think.

Also, as for the credit card. I would set up a pay pal account and get verified, then you can sign up for the pay pal debit mastercard and use that as your credit card, that way you are not actually "Charging" anything. I think debt is a terrible terrible thing and I would never ever recommend getting into it. I have a paypal debit mastercard that I use ONLY for paypal things, for setting up shop, for ordering supplies and for sending my packages. That is ALL it gets used for and I adore it. It makes using paypal that much easier IMO.

I don't think I have ever had more than 15 items on my etsy at a time, but have had several big orders custom from those. Even just having a few on there is a good way to start in my opinion..people can see what you do and you can add to it as you get more made.
I recomend using paypal too..alot of people won't buy without using it and I use my regular debit card..no credit cards for me.
I have fun with etsy and it has paid off, not just in things people have bought directly off the site, but orders and barters in addition. Have fun!

Thanks for the answers! I think I have decided to get my own debit card separate from the one I have with my husband. That way I can more easily keep track of everything. My husband wants me to get my own business ID number and sell on my own site. I dont mind getting the ID number but think i would be better off starting with Etsy first. Then if things work out go out on my own with a website.

Thanks Again!!

www.etsy.com It's a site where anyone can set up a "store" to sell their handmade items. If you see a web address with etsy in it, like at the bottom of several members posts, you can click it to see their shop.
